Forums - Microsoft - The best explanation (so far) of the "cloud" advantage for Xbox One

well yes except that before it was more about dedicated servers now it's more about clusters of servers working together.... I mean of course a lot of it is pure marketing jumbowombo.... but things have evolved since the 80s 90s :D

It was always clusters of servers since 90s or before... all financial operations in the worlds is making using a clusters of servers... that's only a small example.

But for consoles games... yes it is somekind new but there are games that used cloud computing in consoles too... FFXI used that in PS2 era for example.

Anyway dedicated servers means a clusters of servers designed for a specific operation... that is still cloud computing.

hmm yes I over thought that too much in my head actually lol.... I was picturing a server room versus a borg like network in my head..... probably the heat :P

its the future, should be great for gaming worlds online

To be fair MS needs to show to us what the beneficies this "cloud" will give to us... and for now they couldn't.

the xbone's main advantage is the developers don't have to put in the effort of having a dedicated server.

..and that's something i care about why? what's the consumer advantage?

You care about it for a few reasons:

1. Xbox One games will run on the fastest cloud server on the market

invisible to me.  don't care.

2. You will not have lack of server bottlenecks and other issues you get when you have other companies running their own servers

i haven't had any problem on ps3 to date which is supposedly the inferior online experience.  again, don't care.

3. You won't have servers shut down for Fifa 2014 in 2016 when EA decides they want to save money

this one, however, is a good point.

In my book it is everything you outsource from your computer onto another one to via a network (be it computational power or storage/be it internet or intranet)

Exactly... every server pool that we uses since 19xx lol.

This one better:

Cloud computing is a colloquial expression used to describe a variety of different computing concepts that involve a large number of computers that are connected through a real-time communication network (typically the Internet).

or this one:

Cloud computing refers to applications and services offered over the Internet. These services are offered from data centers all over the world, which collectively are referred to as the "cloud." This metaphor represents the intangible, yet universal nature of the Internet.

I think it expreses the same only with bigger words and more computers...

EDIT:

found another one, this time from a dictionary:

a type of computing in which computing resources are shared via the Internet, rather than the use of local servers or personal computing devices

so basically you can scratch the intranet part... though even these are sometimes global for some corporations...

EDITEDIT:

Got the error in my definition now... so basically: If you outsource something from your computer onto a multitude of computers via a network.

So no gameplay or graphcis change after all... so what the "advantage" of Cloud??? And the dev already said the game gets boring with suck number of zombies on the screen... they downgraded to way less.

Advantage of the cloud is that the PS4 version will run the sucky zombie AI while the Xbox One version will have "enahnced" AI if you're connected to the internet.

Someone above said that "Better with Kinect sensor" sticker will be replaced with "Better with Internet connection" on the Xbox One games.

Another advantage is that devs don't have to worry about the cost of server hosting and can incorporate this in to Xbox One games. Multiplat matchmaking on Xbox One games will be faster with less downtime. What do you think is better 50 EA servers that Fifa 2014 will use for PS4 or 100,000 Microsoft ones? The irony is that the 50 EA servers will most likely run on Microsofts cloud too except EA will have to pay for it.

Finally there may be graphical advantages too and shorter/less loading times as well. But these need to be shown by MS to be considered as credible advantages...

Why would they bother making this magical "enhanced" AI that only some XB1 users will have some of the time? What is much more realistic is that they will make the best they can for the PS4, take the chunk the XB1 can't run and stick that on the cloud. So then the XB1 users can have PS4 quality AI if they are connected to the cloud. This is they only way they can justify spending time on such a limited feature.

Why bother with anything if that's the case... They can just make COD over and over and make money.

Seriously though, they will bother because people take pride in what they do and want the best possible product. Considering that Xbox One doesn't run without internet "some of the time" isn't really much of a concern.

Stop worrying about who's better and just enjoy the games!

They have limited time and resources. Chances are they will put as much of these as possible into the core game. it is the same reason why most games don't bother with Kinect/Move functionality, which only requires control mapping and playtesting. That is far far easier than coming up with a whole new set of advanced AI, and they still don't do it that much because they would rather put everything on the main game.

So, like I said, realistically you are looking at getting left over PS4 AI at best.

Sounds good but likely won't effect us living in North America where Gaikai is pretty well established server wise.
