We'll see how it goes. If my reasoning is confirmed, I am going to laugh at you. And not just once, that's going to hunt you for years. Just like your underground movement.

It's just silly to not even try to play at all because of the slim possibility of their servers not working.

I am more worried about how it's organized and the ensuing chaos. tbone's MK7 tournaments were quite messy.

Still shouldn't stop you from trying to play!

Also, as shown by the video below, people are already playing the game online with no problem, though of course not nearly as many people as there will be after Friday, but still!

Is there a certain deadline when we should give out our NNID to enter the tournament if that is needed?

I won't be able to make the first tournament sadly. Can't wait to know who will win though!

The thing is, I'm still not 100% sure on how MK8's online works. Maybe I can talk to Rol about it since it seems he has the game.

OT: Get excited people! MK8's official release for Europe/US is tomorrow!

I checked out the tournament options, so I am going to throw the three GPs with four races each out of the window. There will be only one GP with 16 races, that's going to last about an hour too. Due to the lack of interruptions inbetween (because no results to write down and no timely starts for additional GPs), four more races than originally planned can be added. Empty slots will be filled up with CPU drivers on normal difficulty; it will be raised to difficult for future tournaments once it's clear that normal doesn't pose a real challenge for the majority of participants anymore. This benefits score tracking, because the distribution of points per rank will always be the same in each tournament.

Tournaments do keep track of high scores. I tested the Mario Cup (eight races) and it allowed players to randomly drop in, and after eight races they will be automatically dropped out while their score will be added to the high score list. What this means for my tournament is that the time of unlocking will be 90 minutes long each Thursday, starting at 20:00 CEST. This gives us a long enough window to complete the 16 races while the game does keep track of scores. The way tournaments work, it's possible for latecomers to join after the tournament has already started. However, the cutoff for scores is when I have finished my 16th race. That's when I am going to write down the scores of everyone to add them to a Google spreadsheet later on. The score tracking the tournament room does is meaningless. It's only going to show the highest score of each player over the course of 16 races and that means that by the second time we've played a tournament, it's already going to be utterly useless.

Any objections to 16 races in one go? Should it be eight races times two due to fear of connection errors? That's about the only reason why shorter stints would make sense, because someone who gets dropped out won't show up in the totals anymore.

Quoting this in order to highlight the question.

Also, do you know if NNIDs are necessary for these tourneys, Rol? Since you have the game it would be nice if you gave me a quick run down on how it all should/will work in my case.

What do you mean? You can vote on any course you would like, if that's what you are asking.
