wish there were more/better shumps out this gen.  i think sine mora was the best one and that doesn't really set the bar terribly high.

average game.. this gen had some great Cave games and other like

Mushihime-sama Futari Black Label
Space Invaders Infinite Gene
Ketsui
Espgaluda II Black Label
Deathsmiles
Galaga Legions DX
Dodonpachi: Maximum
Trouble Witches Neo
Muchi Muchi Pork
Ginga Force
Akai Katana Shin
Söldner-X 2: Final Prototype

strange enough all the shumps were for the 360 this gen... (and iOS) i think only Söldner-X 2: Final Prototype,  Galaga Legions DX and Space Invaders Infinite Gene are also on  the ps3

then maybe it's my bad for being a ps3 guy.  as i was reading your list i was going to point out the ones i've played and it was soldner, galaga, and space invaders.  space invaders was the best in my opinion but i liked sine mora better and i agree it is mostly average.  maybe the ps4 will do me better.  i think 360 got most of the small titles by being far easier to develop for than ps3.

also, you missed pixal junk shooter.  that one wasn't too bad either.

Around the Network

Oh my goodness. This is IS my childhood. The music, the gameplay, the graphics, EVERYTHING about it screams masterpiece. I remember how I used to look at awe at the few seconds of cutscene before your plane took off and when your plane crashed. Back then those cutscenes were so amazing.

I really do hope they remake this. Along with quite a few other MS DOS games actually.

Why aren't you happy with the 2010 version by dotemu? Some games should be left alone.. And no.. Its not top 5 of SHUMPS.. Maybe top 15.. But not top 5..

Reason why I think deserves to be in top 5 is is uniqueness. there is not one epic shooter out there that I know that controls like Raptor, has a weapons system like raptor, has enemy patterns like Raptor...etc.

There are many awesome SHMUPS out there, however when you play something like Aleste and Radiant Silvergun, you can tell they come from the same genepool of game design. Same goes for a lot of those horizontal scrolling ones. Gradius and Rtype feel very similar. Wouldn't be surprised if same devs worked on a lot of those games.

Closest thing to Raptor i can think of is Raiden and that isn't very similar.

Id also say Raptor feels very American in style and design, which is quite rare for SHMUPs.

Because Tyrian is like Raptor, but better :P

It has upgradable weapons after purchase, primary and a secondary weapon with two modes of fire, plus two side weapons and a secret one. And different ships, shields and energy generators. Every planet has different items for purchase. Some items (usually the best ones) are extremely hard to find, normally in secret planets.

This s  bold claim. I will have to seek out this Tyrian and check it out...

Its pretty awesome that I have Crysis 3, Bioshock Infinite sitting in my library untouched yet I'm playing Raptor, Tyrian and Streets of Rage Remake V5.

Next gen gaming to the max!

Then there's this game named Lords of Thunder. It has few things to buy and it's old too, but it has music, so...
