I once asked a man what a "core gamer" was, and he gave me this definition.

"One who has a genuine interest in video games and who buys video games on a relatively constant basis."

Hole in the theory:

Does it make me a hardcore player if I only play CoD games or only FF games or only Halo games or religiously follow every single title and spin off of any other steeply milked franchise ?

Imo, being hardcore has nothing to do with being addicted to playing a particular game. If you limit yourself to one or a bunch of games, you aren't hardcore.  I've known people addicted to Tetris, Gran Turismo, some people are addicted to Farmville, we know tons of people addicted to COD games. That's not hardcore to me.

I'm starting to view hardcore vs casual debate in terms of porn. There is hardcore and softcore (casual) porn. What could be hardcore to some might be softcore to others.

We can measure this using attach ratio, which is the ratio between software sold and hardware sold. It tells us the average number of games each consumer buys.

This is the attach ratio. This is hardcore.

We done ?

Doesn't this just mean that the Xbox 360 has sold more consoles in countries where people can afford to buy a higher ammount of games while the PlayStation 3 has sold more consoles in countries where people can't buy as many games as they'd like to?

A banner stolen from some site xD

Sorry but I did not see anywhere that a "hardcore" gamer should be older than a certain age or not be a COD fan.

Looking at these 2 kids, I can actually see them as hardcore, and they are going to play way more longer than the average, kick the but of a good amount of other "casual" players etc....

The problem is with the definition of "hardcore" gamer... Some people see this as an "elitist" status, some others see it as how many hours you play per week, some others as how many games you played... etc... That's why it is always making me laugh when I see any article, posts, ad saying something like : "made for hardcore gamers". This is so vague...

OP: In my opinion (and my definition of hardcore gamer), which is someone who plays a lot of time and to a lot of games. Yes, I think the 360 has more hardcore gamers but not by far.

I think I explained myself quite clearly some four posts ago.

Playing only every CoD title or every Halo title (and they are extensively milked franchises, accounting for a major chunk of software sold) does not mean you actually play a lot of games.

Also playing WoW 24/7 doesn't make you a hardcore gamer.

Oh and who are you? The official english dictionary?

I saw your post and this is your opinion/definition of hardcore gamer... Not mine... And like my definition; yours is very subjective.

If you look at the definition of hard-core in the dictionary, it basically says that it is someone very loyal to something and these kids are pretty loyal to the Call of Duty brand if you ask me. They are playing more than the average "adult/nostalgic/elitist" out there who believe "he" or "she" is the perfect hardcore gamer model.

I think I explained myself quite clearly some four posts ago and at no point did I talk about age.

My definition of hardcore gamer  is being loyal to a game (or more than one) and playing it (or playing in general) a lot.

a lot of PS3 games are bought digitally now, and the 360 had a full year by itself
