Sony stock value growth has more to do with BOJ quantitative easing and Japanese government policies than other things:

Still much worse performance than Nikkei, and SNE stock value is only replicating what most other Japanese export companies stock value are doing. BOJ is flooding the market with money, even countries like Greece or Rwanda 10 year bounds are at lowest levels in years, ~8%, when not so long ago they were at ~20%.

You seem knowledgeable on this stuff...
Can u explain what is meant by a "spin off?" I read an article talking about this recently, but they never seemed to clarify what exactly this entails.

A "spin off" is when you create a "daughter" company with parts of a company, in this case, with the Movies and Music parts of Sony. They can sell part of it to reduce their debt, while keeping a majority of its shares to control it.
