I think what Troll_Monster meant was that games that are designed so that you can play mutiplayer on one system without the need to split the screen. Sports games are an obvious example.
I also want to throw my support behind MK64, some of my best gaming memories are 4 player MK64 races. So much of the fun was the post race trash talk, and lets not forget the fun of knocking the controller out of your friends hand for that little extra advantage.
