Just to add.

The PS4 increase in memory is not a big change... the project is not changed, the memory controller is not changed, nothing of the PS4 was changed. Sony just replaced the 16x 2Gb modules of GDDR5 per 16x 4Gb modules of GDDR5... it is like to open your PC with 2x2GB modules and replace per 2x4GB modules.

So the rumors are 100% correct about PS4.

GAF always help me to show how the magic was done.

I love these images... makes everything seems simple and easy... and in the case of 4GB GDDR5 to 8GB GDDR5 it is a simple and easy move that make everything developers happy and the forum users crazy excited.

Is it worth it though? 4GB was enough to be competitive and it could have given them a price advantage.

These pictures are nice but don't really tell the whole story. You can put bigger rams into your PC because the address lines on the pcbs are there, You will not be able to put 64G ram modules into your PC because the address lines are NOT there. So the question is: Were the address lines (in this case it would only take one additional line) already on the pcb when they designed it with 4G in mind? Probably not (every line is additional costs, so they did redesign the pcb (which had to be done anyways because there likely were "things to relocate" anyways for the final board.

Going from 4G to 8G is the result of many factors. The first one is certainly the price and availability of the 4GBit chips. Then Sony got first look at early launch titles and probably saw that at 4G, things were getting tight (with all the multimedia os stuff around one "needs to have nowadays", and bloated software due to "we have so much memory now"). Engineering might have dissected an XBox and saw that the price was high, too. Ultimately the bean counters decided (they always do, and they probably learned from the 256M/256M PS3 fiasco) to allow for 8G memory.

4GB for the operating system? Windows doesn't even use that much -;- 2GB at the most.

windows doesn't record 720p games, erase it and record another one, with multiple aplication opened at the same time, people playing your game from another location, social networks always connected. For a console, that is too much. The x86-64 architecture means that it needs a complex OS like any other computer.

Look the Wii U with its 1GB how its struggling, and that one is simpler.

PS4 has a dedicated chip to handle the video recording features. This isn't going to take up any system resources.

Wii U is struggling with 1GB because Nintendo is Nintendo. The Wii U was rushed to market, which is ironic considering the console itself should have came out at least a year earlier.

This.

Also, it'd be neat if they used the same strategy for the RAM for the GPU. Y'know, underestimate its ability, like if the 1.82 Teraflops was more around 2.1Tflops or something.

:p

No, you think it was a fact. The only factual information, that you or I know, is the PS4 has 8GB of GDDR5 and it was kept secret. All else is pintless to debate since you don't know it for sure.

Look at the rumored PS4 specs from VgLeaks, and look at the offical ones released by Sony.

THEY ARE 99% identical. The only difference is that VgLeaks listed 4GB instead of 8GB. What happened here? Sony had recently upgraded dev kits and announced it to the public before any devs even had the chance to receive them. LEAKS COME FROM DEVELOPERS WHO HAVE THE HARDWARE.

More proof that these leaks(Yes, leaks, not rumors) are true is how surprised developers were. They went on the record saying they were very surprised with the 8GB of RAM.

In other words, you're saying the NextBox's rumored, yes RUMORED, features are for sure?

Not rumors, leaks. There is a difference. These leaked specs we got are LEAKS. They are backed by reliable sources on a credible website.

These aren't just some made up rumors on some blog. They are leaks. LEAKS. L.E.A.K.S.

Cost vs. Benefit

Will the additional RAM pay off in the long run beyond some Digital Foundtry comparison articles? What I'm hoping is that Sony struck some deals with developers in exchange for basically letting them have a say in the PS4 specs.

Yes, absolutely.

Notice this is NOT 2008 anymore. There is NO space for three consoles. One of the three consoles will die a horrible death in the next 2-3 years (and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which one it will be). Space is even getting tight for two consoles only, given the many competing systems around.

You can remain at the top of that mountain shouting "leaks" all you want, it is irrelevant. Plenty of things get "leaked" only to be invalidated later. Some of the PS4's specs may have been revealed early on, sure, but that means nothing to what I said to SuperChunk. The 4GB rumor turned out to be nothing more than a rumor.

NO, not "some". All.
The only problem with the PS4 leaks was they were a few weeks outdated and the RAM had been upgraded to 8GB. That's it. Every other detail and specs was correct.

The 4GB LEAK was true. If you go to some developers, I'm sure some of them still have some 4GB dev kits. These consoles started off as PCs with components that they are targeting for the final product. These developer kits start off weak. Keep in mind that some developers may get kits years in advance. The closer it gets to release, the better these specs usually get. Here's a prodcut roadmap documenting the PS4 devkits evolution http://www.vgleaks.com/orbis-devkits-roadmaptypes/

You see that last dev kit there? It mentions 8GB for dev kits, 4GB for retail. Looks like they changed their minds.

You have to understand that some of these decisions can be made overnight. Leaks happen, some things can change, most of them don't. What you see is what you get. I guarantee you the Xbox 720 LEAKS are real. Take a look at how the memory insdie Durango works http://www.vgleaks.com/durango-memory-system-overview/ Come back to this post when Microsoft officially confirms this info on May 21st.

And that still doesn't disprove what I said to Chunk. Thus, you're wasting your time. Even today, all of the PS4's specs haven't been 100% revealed. Complementing my point, SOME of the specs were revealed, but not all, and Sony NEVER said the system would have 4GB of RAM. Could it have been changed, adjusted, misunderstood, yep, but as far as I'm concerned, 8GB of GDDR5 didn't become a fact until Sony said it.

Really, I'm actually not sure why you're hard-pressing this in the first place.

Have you ever been to Antartica? Does the fact that you've never been there mean it doesn't exist? You haven't been there yourself so its just a rumor right?

Your logic is pretty ridiculous. Let me guess, you also think all info on Wikipedia is fake because some trolls might have  messed with some pages?

My "logic" is ridiculous? If something is "LOGICal", it can't be ridiculous. But again, I ask, why are you so hard-pressed on regurgitating your opinion for the umpteenth time? We got it already.

Your logic. Your way of thinking. Words have more than one use, you should have learned this in school.

You're the one that's so hard-pressed on regurgitating your opinion over and over again. We get it, you think rumors are all bullshit because THE INTERNET. You have flawed logic. Rumors/Leaks are often proven true. There's a reason why rumors get reported on website so often. Where there is smoke, there's fire.
