Forums - Microsoft - Is Halo 4 multiplayer a flop?

It seems people are getting tired of the franchise getting milked. I remember Halo 3 was in the top 3 for a very long time. It even got back on top a couple of weeks after MW3 was released.

That's an absurd statment considering that CoD is milked far more than Halo and yet has so many more people playing the multiplayer (plus Halo 4 has been selling very well and will outsell Reach at least). Halo 4 MP may be a flop but it's definitely not because of "milking".

It really boils down to a few things.

1. No skill ranked playlists: This was by far the most requested thing with Halo 4 but 343 decided to sit with their thumbs up their arses and not include it. And their pathetic half-assed attempt of implementing it this month is useless since you can't even see your rank unless you go to Halo Waypoint. A skill based ranking system is what made Halo 3 and is why people kept coming back in droves years after it's release.

2. Halo 4 glitches: Halo 4 is probably the worst Halo when it comes to glitches, people cheating and general bad network design choices. 343 really screwed things up with their terrible lag compensation system and couple that with rampant cheating and you have a lot of people who get turned off by that and won't play because of it.

3. CoD is "it": Call of Duty is obviously far more popular so when people play MP games together their choice will almost always be Cod because that's what their friends will be playing.

People are obviously willing to try Halo MP games still because most people have a soft spot in their heart for it (you can see this because both Halo 4 and Reach had fantastic starts for MP population) but both the last Halo games have had so many issues that people are really getting turned off by it. If they don't get Halo 5 right, the Halo franchise may be in for some rough times (in comparison to how well it usually sells)

Personally despite all of these negatives I still love Halo 4 MP. I have the most fun with it out of any MP game I've ever played. But I can see why so many hate it.

Fun fact: Halo 3 had a higher daily peak poplulation 3 years after it's release (even though MW2 was out) than Halo 4 has right now, less than a 5 months after it's release. In fact even a couple months after Halo: Reach was released, Halo 3 still had about the same amount of people online as Halo 4 has right now.

It's quite sad to see my favorite MP game fall so far.

This should have been the OP really.

I agree with this pretty much and I'm sure most people would at least be able to recognize these all as valid points. On the other hand the OP is just like a bad N4G article then we have ethomaz with his usual anecdotal references that only make sense in his head with prime agenda at making anything Xbox look bad.

Could have been a good thread, instead we get this :/

lol you guys really had anythign against me...

Just face it... Halo 4 MP is not popular like previous Halos... there are things wrong inside it that makes the MP players avoid it... it that is not a wrong direction then I don't know what is.

Give more 2-3 months and you will see less than 100k players per day in the Halo 4 MP... for a franchise like Halo this is a dead MP.

My graph using the numbers found in http://halocharts.com/2012/chart/totalpopulation/all.

I think the guys are just pissed because that is the truth.

And for these that talk about the Halo 3 MP didn't have competition and forgot the Reach MP had competition and the number of players was way better than Halo 4 MP.

So stop with false excuses to try to avoid the reality.

For me what changed in the wrong way in the Halo 4 MP:

- Loadouts segregate player base and negate player skill
- Granades are useless
- Skill are useless
- Vehicles are useless
- Ordnance system promotes camping
- Bad armor choices
- Unlock system is broke
- Bad maps choices

Everything that makes Halo MP AWESOME and UNIQUE is not present in Halo 4 MP... it is a good MP but no more awesome... it is more like CoD now (for CoD I have CoD).

The real story is Judgement barely beating out BLOPS.

Well Judgement makes sense because it is a spinoff/prequel created by another developer.. it is not a main line game in the franchise.

Yeah but it's a brand new game, as opposed to BLOPS, which is old as hell with TWO other iterations of CoD after it. (MW3, BLOPS 2).

You have to remember BLOPS is one of the best CoD created... better than some Modern Warfare and definitily better thanb BLOPS 2 .

So is the original Modern Warfare, but do you see that in the chart? No.

No. It's just that 90% of modern gamers prefer easy & stress free multiplayer. Halo is too complicated for them.

Times of multiplayer games that needed more skill are long gone.

I couldn't agree more. Multiplayer for Halo 4 is amazing and extremelly adictive once you learn the mechanics and stop getting your a** kicked.

lol @ Halo 4 having almost 5,500,000 people online on day one.
