Forums - Gaming - So, XCOM is coming to iOS

If you haven't seen the video yet, here it is:

The full game, they say. The only changes are a touch-optimized UI and a few maps shaved off to come in under App Store's file size limits. This is a pretty notable release for a few reasons.

- It's an Unreal Engine game. With Epic's promise to improve the scalability of its engine, it could be a sign that any Unreal game which could have a suitable touch UI might see a mobile port. Of course, technology cost is only one barrier to such efforts...

- It's a port from a home console/PC game, not a handheld game. Console and PC ports to iOS are nothing new, but this is a graphically rich game which has only been out for six months now. Most PC ports to iOS are from games much older than that.

- It's premium priced, still going for $50 on steam. I doubt this version will cost that much, but it's hard to see this selling for less than $20. This is a big test for premium games on iOS in an age where the freemium model seems to be taking over. Even if it's really successful, I'm sure freemium games will dominate, but it will be crucial to prove that there's still good money to be made in making a good product and straight-up selling it to people for cash up front.
