Never did that yet honestly. I've always just waited to get the system first.
I would never do it. the only reason I would see to do it is if a game comes out that i know is limited in print and wil increase in value. But I haver bought a game like that before.
I got Mario Kart and Street Fighter 2 a year before I got a Super Nes. I thought I was getting one for Christmas. Imagine my surprise.
I also bought Tomb Raider before I got a PS1. They was a shortage in 1997 or something. Couldn't find one anywhere so I just bought the game. Spent hours listening to the music and dialog from the game before I actually played it. Needless to say, the story was ruined.
I think that's it.
Ended up picking up Disgaea 4 for free off Gamestop.com long ago with some odd promo code I had hanging around. Oddly I never got a PS3 and ended up giving the game to a friend for free. He was pretty happy so it ended up working out in the end.
There was another game I bought for PSP (can't recall which) that I bought a year before I ended up buying a PSP.
It's just that simple.
The only time i have ever done that was when the PSP came out. i brought Midnight Club 3: DUB addition i think it was called for £45 before the release date.
I was 15 and working a part time job so I had to order my PS2 from a catalogue and pay it weekly. While I was waiting 3 weeks for its delivery I bought final fantasy 10. The next week I bought a 8MB memory card. Console arrived, happiness ensued.
I bought Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 before my PS3 arrived. And I had controllers and 2 games before I could even find a Wii.
I made sure I bought Ocarina of Time 3D on day one even though I didn't have a 3DS at the time.

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.
