Forums - Gaming - Microsoft not worried about PS4, waiting until E3 to reveal the Xbox 720?

GameFans

Sony revealed the PlayStation 4 last month at a special event, becoming the first one to kick off the next-gen console wars (unless you consider the Wii U as next-gen). This gave Sony a head start in the hype department, as everyone and their grandmother has been talking and speculating about the PS4 since.

But Microsoft doesn’t appear to threatened. In fact, they might not reveal the Xbox 720 until June at E3, according to our source. Sony put the ball in Microsoft’s court by disclosing the PlayStation 4 specs, leading many to wonder what the Xbox 720 might have in store.

Our source at Microsoft tells us that internally, the company isn’t worried one bit about the PlayStation 4. They’re very confident in not only the hardware specs of the next generation Xbox, but the games and the online features. Developers have had the final version of the Xbox 720 dev kit for a while now, and are pleased with its architecture.

Sony revealed the PS4 on February 20th with some powerful hardware, including an 8-core CPU and 8 GB of RAM. The console was made with developers in mind, and Sony showcased plenty of online and social features, including the ability to stream PS1, PS2, and PS3 games.

There still isn’t any hard evidence of what kind of hardware Microsoft packs in the Xbox 720, but at the very least, we know that they’re confident about the console they’re building.

It now appears Sony will have a few more months of free media buzz, as Microsoft will take their time and wait for E3. E3 2013 kicks off on June 11 in Los Angeles.

Announcing at E3 would be a massive mistake in my opinion

Yes, there is rumors of the 720 HD remake for the XBox 360 will be revealed at E3, as part of the Summer of Arcade promo this winter. As part of that is speculation that it will be part of a reboot of Game Room.

I don't see how MS can wow us. We've seen 1080p console gaming now and the next PS already skirting a $500 price point. If MS goes more powerful they'll be losing money again or be more expensive. If they go with same or less power it'll be a me too affair only with different 3rd parties (COD and BF most likely). If they make Kinect the big focus it'll be a "seen that" kind of response since we already have Kinect and it being more accurate won't really wow anyone. They either need a slew of new IP or a bunch of unique online features. If these consoles are similarly spec'd then revealing first will be a big deal in killing MS hype.

Well it could happen. My main problem though is if it's pushed all the way to E3, most of the information will be leaked before the show. We already know the hardware and within 3 months I'd be shocked if games, ui, kinect2, the name, and even the box didn't pop up online.

That's probably the right call. Announce it now and it looks like a knee-jerk reaction. Wait a little while and it appears you're still on your own time-table.

I don't know that Microsoft should worry about the PS4 but in business you always need to stay a little bit concerned about what the competition is doing. More than that, though, they need to worry about turning Gold into a better value and fixing their relationships with the indie developer community. Microsoft's biggest enemy might turn out to be their own arrogance. Both Sony and Microsoft had quite a few problems with their last hardware/networking products; Sony looks like they've fixed most of that, so it's Microsoft's turn at bat and they'd better be swinging for the fences.

I'm begginning to think X720 is not coming in 2013.

I've kinda been thinking the same thing.  For such a long time people were thinking PS4 wouldn't be out until 2014 but now 720 just keeps staying silent.  If they reveal at E3 and release this holiday it'll be the shortest reveal to launch window in my memory.  Then again PS4 just set the record for that so who knows.  I'm just hoping for no PS4 delays at this point since PS3 was supposed to come in Spring 2006 and ended up being November for some and March of 07 for others.  Even Vita was supposed to be WW in 2011 before the tsunami and delays everywhere but Japan.

This doesn't really show confidence. It means they don't think they can win E3 without making it their console launch. They should have got enough together to have a solid Xbox launch soon with plenty of games left over to show at E3.

I've had that suspicion for a while too. I seriously question if they're READY to launch this year. A GREAT launch is preferable to a weak launch, in my opinion. Even if they launch a few months later, say May 2014, it'd be better if they can use that time to fine-tune the hardware and get at least a major exclusive for day 1. This year I don't think it's likely they'll have a major, hardware-mover EXCLUSIVE CORE game at launch. I know they would do just fine having the new COD and BF4 at launch, but they need to play their cards better this time and be more aggresive in Europe.
