5.59, 5.72, 4.43. =) @RPGuy96, MGS was NEVER BIG in Japan. Surprised? and GTA series also were NEVER BIG in Japan. Again Surprised? As i said BEFORE - DIFFERENT TASTES.
OK, now About ATTACH rates of SMG and other SM games in Japan: http://www.vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?reg1=Japan&game1=Super+Mario+World+-+SNES®2=Japan&game2=Super+Mario+64+-+N64®3=Japan&game3=Super+Mario+Galaxy+-+Wii&weeks=100
First of all, the selling trend is lower for SMG. Second, Wii need to reach those 80-100 mln. which are GAMERS, not casuals non-gamers.
Comparing hardcore/casual gamers vs hardcore/casual gamers + casual non-gamers, is not the best thing to show ATTACH rate.
DO YOU PEOPLE UNDERSTAND, THAT CASUAL NON-GAMERS ARE NOT SAME PEOPLE AS CASUAL GAMERS? |
Your graph shows SMG tracking below SM64, the game that carried the system for I don't even know how long, and HIGHER than Super Mario World. And keep in mind that your link only shows JAP sales -- you ignore that SMG is doing much BETTER in NA and EUR than it is in JAP, and probably better RELATIVELY than previous Mario titles in NA and EUR than JAP.
SM64 sold roughly half of its copies in NA; SMG is at 55% NA/WW already, JAP is at less than 20% (roughly 16% by my estimate) and NA and EUR sales are not leveling out like JAP sales are.

There is evidence that SM64 had about 16% of total sales in JAP -- as of 30 Sep 1999 sales were JAP 1.8m, NA/EUR 9.04m. So, 16.6%. The game probably had better legs outside Japan (total guess), but even if every single sale from 10.84m to 11.89m was outside Japan that's still above 15%. In contrast, the JAP share of total sales for SMG seems to be dropping like a stone and it's ALREADY about or almost as low as SM64 ever was!

In conclusion, your graph FAVORS the older Mario over the newer Mario and it STILL beats one of them. Since it is certain that Wii will beat N64 LTD, and SNES LTD, and since SMG is tracking above SMW on the SNES, do you then agree that SMG total sales ought to beat SMW total sales? (If you want, we can adjust downward to omit pack-in sales, then adjust upward to reflect higher Wii sales.)
Please respond.
P.S. I see you saying a lot about "different tastes" or "casual gamers vs. casual nongamers" but that does not change the fact of SMG sales. Unless you want to talk about only Japan and not WW or NA or EUR, but I thought that was not the case. In any case, you say you want to talk about "ATTACH rate" and not that stuff, and I agree, so I have given attach rates and other valuable comparisons. I hope you enjoy them. =)
P.P.S. Interesting note: JAP Wii = 24.55% WW Wii; JAP N64 = 16.85% WW N64. So it seems that Mario is much less popular, relatively speaking, in Japan now than he was in N64 days; even though JAP Wii has a higher share of WW sales than JAP N64 did, JAP SMG has no higher share of WW sales than JAP SM64 did and it is dropping fast. It would be interesting to see whether this trend was true going further back. BUT I don't see that topic as relevant to the discussion
per se, just an interesting side topic or diversion.
