RUMOR: Rare Developing A Racing Title For Xbox 720

Ever since the Summer of last year to-date, Rare has been on a bit of a hiring spree, having consistently employed new and veteran individuals talented to developing video games. One user over at NeoGaf has taken a deeper look into those hires and noticed a very intriguing pattern: Rare has hired plenty of developers that have experience in the racing genre. Take a look…

  • On October 2011 as Software Director. Previously at Codemasters working as Lead Programmer on titles like DiRT 3 and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.
  • On November 2011 as Studio Audio Director. Previously at Ubisoft Reflections working on Driver: San Francisco.
  • On December 2011 as Technical Art Director. Previously at Codemasters working as Technical Art Supervisor on titles like GRID2, DiRT3, F1 Race Stars and more.
  • On June 2012 as Lead Artist. Previously at Codemasters working as Lead Artist on titles like DiRT3.
  • On October 2012 as Senior Producer. Previously at Codemasters working as Producer on titles like DiRT Showdown, DiRT 3 and more.
  • On November 2012 as Senior Game Designer. Previously at Codemasters working as Senior Game Designer on DiRT Showdown and DiRT 3.
  • On December 2012 as Principal Lighting Artist. Previously at Codemasters working as Environment Artist on titles like GRID2 and DiRT Showdown.
  • On December 2012 as Lead Character Artist. Previously at SCEE working on Evolution Studios’ Motorstorm: Apocalypse and Studio Liverpool’s WipeOut 2048.
  • On December 2012 as Principle environment artist. Previously Senior Lead Artist at Codemasters working on titles like GRID2 and F1 Race Stars.
  • On January 2013 as Principal Rendering Engineer. Previously at Codemasters working as Principal Rendering Programmer at Central Technology Group.
  • On January 2013 as Senior Rendering Engineer. Previously at Codemasters working as Senior Rendering Programmer.
  • On February 2013 as Audio Engineer. Previously at Codemasters working as Senior Programmer on GRID2 and DiRT Showdown.
  • On February 2013 as Principal Artist. Previously Character Artist at Playground Games, Codemasters and Slightly Mad Studios.

That’s quite a bit, is it not? Microsoft is allegedly developing four brand new IPs, so one of those could certainly be an original racing game from Rare. Rumor has it that Rare may have taken over for the next Project Gotham Racing game, or at the very least assisting in its development. Whatever the case, those recent hires certainly do indicate that a racing game could be in development. With plenty of titles in the genre having been developed in the past (Diddy Kong Racing, R.C. Pro-Am, Mickey’s Speedway USA, etc), Rare certainly has the experience.

Assuming that Rare actually is working on a new racing game, would you be excited for it? Would you want it to be an original title or would Project Gotham Racing 5 be okay with you? Let me in the comments!

being rare this probably means joyride 2.

Too bad Rare hasn't been a good studio for almost 10 years now

I would much prefer a new IP or a kart racer in the spirit of Diddy Kong Racing.

They are making a new IP.  They are working on 3 games at the moment.

Yes because they have made one kinect game......That obviously means every game by Rare is now a kinect game right? *rolls eyes*

Viva Pinata Karting.

despite how miserable they have become, i still love rare for the joy they have given me as a child. I will buy 720 if they show some glimpse of their former self. Please let this game be good

Oh, I meant a new racing IP, if the rumor's true. Assigning PGR to Rare seems like a strange choice.
