Aldro said: Just beat Ascension. Took me 9 hours on Normal. Didnt rush it imo, looked for chests etc (and yet was unable to full exactly all weapons though ugh.. although I did max health & magic). Will make a thread later regarding my thoughts but if I was to like score it without going into too much detail: A game that sadly lacks narrative and has a story that doesn't reach its potential. Despite that, it is a great game. - 8/10 |
Cool, looking forward to that thread.

Updated!
EDIT: CHANGE THAT! I havent actually played MP yet aside from the Beta which I know is great. So we're easily talking a 9 here (unless the MP is even more insane which it probably is) xD
EDIT2: With that said, the campaign was an 8/10. With MP itll go up. But with GoW3 and previous entries: The campaign alone really put it to a 9-10 standard for me. So yeah.. worse campaign (slightly) but MP does kinda make up for it.
But yeah, make a thread probably tomorrow or friday. Got an exam on friday so might put all my effort in that tomorrow.

How would you rate it compared to the rest of the series? Would you say it comes in just before GoW 3?
Eek, exams D:

I'd rate Ascension lower than GoW3. Lower than GoW2 as well. Maybe even lower than GoW1, yeah.
Ascensions intro and finale is amazing. The first half kinda feels cool aside from the lack of "motivation to proceed". You're not even sure why you're going where you are entirely. But the game still amazes you with its spectacular stuff.
But halfway through it and the motivation still hasnt entirely built up and you start to feel its getting a bit tedious. You -want- more. You feel something is missing.
The whole second half kinda from where the second demo at E3 starts was where I started getting a bit down on the game.
The puzzles in my opinion were surprisingly cool and pretty difficult at times. I am not used to puzzle games in general and Ascension kinda wowed me in that regard. Not a fan of puzzles but I can recognize well made ones. As you progress and get items: The game really uses them in amazing ways.
The graphics were fucking mindblowing. Really blew me away at times. Very consistant too unlike GoW3 which had the Garden of Hera look a bit out of place to mention one area. Framerate was great despite a surprising amount of enemies on screen. I mean wow many at times.
Sound was remarkable. Theres some glitches here and there but I noticed that putting the sound to Headphones, lowering the voice to 80 and keeping everything else to 100 gave the best effect. I did not USE headphones but for some reason that was the best option to use. The extra "oomph" really existed but I had to play with it to get it.
Music was great too but the tracks were a bit lacking compared to say, GoW3. Still great.
Minuses:
The biggest issue is that the story is kind of.. well "meh". After the intro, it goes into a flashback. It feels like ascension is doing a prequel to all games which is telling a story BEFORE even ascension ITSELF in the mean time. Its just.. wtf xD.
But I did enjoy it. I just wished for more and a more story driven narrative with a even greater conclusion. It does end well though and that final boss is spectacular.
Another big minus is the lack of bosses. I think I can only count like 3 that I remember. Intro and Ending were the best, the rest (..other 1?) was eeh.
I did not have an issue at Trials of Archimedes (I died once) and didnt really feel many hard parts. The game in general makes you ready for tough situations as the RAGE meter you have really requires you to master dodge and not get hit. I played on normal also.
Took me 9 hours. Maxed out health and magic but not all weapons (close though).
Campaign 8/10
I'd rate like GoW3 a 10, GoW2 a 9.5 and GoW1 like a 9 in comparison.
But Ascension has MP which brings it up. But the campaign wasnt on par. It was still very enjoyable and great.
Fuck I should be sleeping!!!
