Forums - Gaming - Sony on announcing PlayStation 4 ahead of Microsoft's next Xbox

VideoGamer

Sony Worldwide Studios VP Michael Denny has described why Sony chose to announce its next-generation console ahead of Microsoft, telling VideoGamer.com that "the timing's right" to reveal PlayStation 4.

"We just felt the timing's right in that the current generation, we're 6 or 7 years or so in now, there's been speculation it's coming," said Denny. "So we're excited by what we've got in the year ahead.

He continued: "As for going first, why not? We're proud of what we've got, we're proud of the system we've got. It's always going to be about the content and we feel we've got that coming in droves."

Sony revealed some of that content last night, lifting the lid on a next-generation version of Killzone, as well as a new next-generation racer from Evolution Studios.

"We thought it was right to share that with people," Denny continued, adding that the PlayStation 4's architecture removes "any technical shackles that developers had in the past" to allow for "unbridled creative freedom".

"We went to the development community and asked their views as well," said Denny, "[and] worked hand-in-hand with hardware and software system engineers to build an informed architecture that we believe takes off any technical shackles that developers had in the past, and now there's unbridled creative freedom."

Sony announced PlayStation 4 last night, detailing the console’s new online functionality and DualShock 4.

The final hardware, Denny suggests, will be revealed at E3.

Microsoft is expected to announce its next-generation Xbox soon, with the latest rumours pointing towards an April reveal..

Such a change from last gen. Last gen it was like "hey were SOny, here is our PS3. We don't care how hard it is or how much you hate it, you developers have to learn how to make it work"

THis gen they sound like Nintendo "we went to developers and had them help us make it as easy as can be to develop for"

It was perfect timing to be honest.

i am definitely ready for a new console. the only thing that sucks in the long wait for november.

Good timing IMO.

Perhaps SCE has improved, become more humble, less arrogant and silly since Kaz left. (My sig)

The only thing your signature proves is that you're upset Sony beat MS to announcing their next-gen system

How in the wide world of fuck does it prove that?

1, 2, 3... Go.

It's pretty obvious, bro.

Let that hate go. Buy yourself a PS4 on Launch day. All this hating is bad for your health!

I am surprised Sony got the jump. But their conference left a "meh" taste in most mouths save the hardcore fans.

If MS SHOWS the console (lol), shows some core games, implements "Xbox Plus", they will be in a great position.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Uhm, no he did not. He was talking about longevity and he said MS has never released a console that has lasted more than 4 or 5 years. He was correct at the time...

He will obviously be correct about PS3 having longevity. I remember when people were making fun of Sony's 10 year plan when the sales were low. Look where they are now, outlasting all the others.

No people were laughing with people like Crazyman and etc who were flooding the forums with comments as 'The Ps3 will last ten years without needing a new console thanks to the power of the Cell'.  And ofcourse he is wrong about X360 longetivity now =p.

I don't see the relation between both quotes, he was right back in 2009 about Xbox lacking longevity. He'll be right about the 10 year plan for PS3. PS3 is lackcing longevity because PS4 is announced?
