PS4 hardware design not finalized

Sony president of Worldwide Studios apologizes for not showing hardware last night during reveal.

NEW YORK CITY--Notably absent from Sony's PlayStation 4 announcement last night was the hardware itself. During a roundtable discussion today, Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida apologized to gamers for not showing the device itself.

"I'm sorry we did not show the hardware," Yoshida said. "But we have plans from now--in February--through the year for the launch. We like to disclose things based on what we think we really want to communicate first. And next time we will talk about these things."

If Sony had shown off a PS4 unit last night, it would not have been representative of the final design. Yoshida was asked, "is the final hardware finished?" to which he bluntly responded, "No, it's not."

WHO CARES IF THEY DIDN'T SHOW HOW IT LOOKED! Wow this isn't a fashion contest lol it doesn't even matter if it's literally just a big square and it says PS4 on it.

Just to clarify Yoshida's comment. He is not talking about "hardware" in general (there won't be any change in specs). Adding 4G of gddr5 ram in "the last minute" poses considerable challenges to the case and pcb designers. 32 gddr5 chips, that is a lot of real estate to account for, and thermal dissipation problems just went up a notch or two. Internal or external power brick probably hasn't been decided yet I'd guess.
It was clear that Sony wouldn't show the PS4 box (and why should they? Do people really want to look at a piece of plastic instead of people showing off what can be done with the plastic box?)

Hi, I'm a gamer. I judge consoles by their looks. My purchase opinion relies only on how pleasing the hardware is to my eyes.

Hmmmm... Yoshida also said they decided not to show it and price in order to keep some mystery and interest leading into E3. It was part of strategy.

The controller was only shown because it would be awkward not showing it during demos. There was an informative thread on this.
