Forums - Sony - PS4 controller a GIMMIC??????

This is a question for all the Sony supporters that think Nintendo Wii remote, Gamepad, Miiverse and Microsoft Kinect are "gimmicks" that are bad for gaming. Will you quit gaming when games you love are released forcing you to use the touch pad and 3D camera motion controls? Are you satisfied with the new controller touch pad and Eye toy built in? Are those considered gimmicks also or is it innovation all of a sudden? Im actually glad Sony is attempting different and new ways to play but what are your thoughts?

I'm sensing hostility.
I love all the consoles. And yes, they all have gimmicks.

Sony's just keeping up with the times. It'll surprise me not at all if 720's controller has motion detection and a touchpad as well.

As long as it doesn't interfer with standard play (like the wiimote did on some genres) I doubt anyone will care if it's there.

Is it a gimmick... or is it innovation?!

We will never know! (Btw, you spelled gimmick wrong. Just add a 'k' to the end and you'll be good to go.)

So eyetoy is included in the PS4? Nice. It will drive up the cost just like kinect 2.0 will for Xbox. level playing field.

But a touch pad? Odd inclusion IMO.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Maybe you should stick to your 5 senses lol. Anything other than that you will be considered crazy. Anyway so you dont think its innovation youre sticking with it being a gimmic? Will you quit playing since they are forcing you to use these gimmics?

Yeah it will have a 3D camera, the same technology the Move uses. Kinect is an infared camera to track movement without the use of a tracking ball to measure distance. Its basically the same thing but Kinect just does not need something special on the camera to track distance. Kinect tracks human body heat instead.

See, if they were trying to sell games solely on the functions of the new controller in actual gameplay, yes, I would call it a gimmick. They didn't go around showing us gameplay using the new touch pad, rather it was there to compliment the controller.

Even though the controller has all these new features, they didn't try to sell it as the defining point of the PS4. That alone assures me that this controller won't be a gimmick. Rather, it will hold well in the transition to the next gen.

It's probably not a gimmick or an innovation. It's just a touchpad, after all, and I doubt it will be used in most games, except perhaps for menu systems. We'll have to wait and see.

Personally, I think of a gimmick as something that's focused on in order to increase sales, and I just don't think the controller is going to be much of a focus. The games themselves appear to be the point of the PS4, not a new control scheme.

If anything from last night could be described as a gimmick, it would probably be the Share function.

Bad liar. :D Openly hostile

Hopefully, you'll be able to take my answer at face value when I say that the touchpad is the embrace of the mobile game. Mobile games will be easily portable back and forth between ps4 and phone, due to this control style. It opens up a market for their own phone line as well, so that they can focus on cross platform games rather than one or the other.

I don't believe it will be extensively used for core gaming, but for secondary features like web navigation, mobile games like angry birds, porting of titles between vita. If you don't have a vita, you don't know how easy the trackpad is to use and it's functions.

In short, the trackpad will share a minor role in core games, but will really shine outside of such.
