Did anyone really thin Google was a threat to Microsoft in this regard?

Yes, many IT people thought and some wanted, Google to crush and kill Microsoft in the Office division.  (There are Google Fanboy's that are much like the ones on here where they follow their chosen company with unquestioned devotion, like a religion.)

I remember when Word Perfect had the huge monopoly over everything.  It was only in the last decade that it finally ended for them.  I think it is for the best, as the guy who developed Word Perfect is an awful family destroying person.

But Microsoft seems to thrive on competition.  So we all get a better product because Google is pushing them.

The many people that thought Google had a chance here had never dealt with Google on an Enterprise level. While google dominates consumer search and smart phones and even tablets to some extent, in the enterprise market even their search appliances suck balls. Yes their were a lot of clueless people that thought google would dominate that market too, but even those people are slowly waking up to the reality. I think the only real problem here is that Google really isn't pushing them all that hard on the enterprise front, they are a long long way behind still and more competition would be a good thing.
