Forums - Gaming - To Clear up confusion on what makes a AAA game

To help with the confusion of a AAA title.  It has nothing to do with rating but with budget.  You can have a AAA game that gets a 20 metacritic or an indie game get a 90.  Ratings has nothing to do with it.

Definition - These games will have a marketing budget in the multiple-millions of dollars, and are planned to earn out in excess of one million titles sold. Investors/publishers expect a multiple-of-cost return on their investment. In order to recoup general development costs, publishers will generally produce the title for the major platforms (currently Xbox 360, PS3, and PC) to maximize profits, unless it is a console exclusive, in which case the console maker will pay for exclusivity to offset the loss of potential profit to the developer.

Thank you sir. A LOT of confuse people regarding the meaning of AAA.

Yeah now people can stop saying PSASBR is a AAA game

Yea I was kind of confused with that thread where the guy listed AAA games from both consoles. I didn't even see Gran Turismo which is Sony's biggest franchise and I'm just going "WTF!"

from the thread of the tittle i knew who was the author of this thread lol

this is why wii never got a AAA title, I guess Nintendo might throw more money in games this gen and finally get a AAA game

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

It's just a metric for retailers to use when they're deciding what to order and how much. It's an industry reference and was never really intended to be anything more. It lets you know what kind of sale-through and marketing support you can expect at a minimum. Distributors send you monthly order catalogs with EVERY game being released in the near future and the "A" designations are just there to help sort through the crap.

Believe me, when the Wii was sailing along, there was a LOT of shovelware to sift through. It's a very handy tool. One thing I noticed when I used to be in charge of purchasing is that the distributor reps typically had very little first-hand information about games and would have to look up projections, whereas they were mostly familiar with all the video releases.
