Forums - Gaming - Do Exclusives Still Matter?

I don't understand the whole "exclusives don't matter argument." When I was choosing between an Xbox and a PS3, I looked at both consoles, and saw that PS3 had the same multiplats and a bunch of very good exclusives. 360 had much fewer. That made my choice right there. People buy Nintendo platforms specifically for their exclusives.

This argument is stupid to me, I don't see why people want three identical platforms. That would be boring as hell.

I know it's a growing thing, it's just really frustrating. It really doesn't make sense to me that a videogame console should do well based on criteria that has nothing to do with videogames. That's like buying a specific car over another one because you like the air freshener that's hanging off of the mirror.

I use Netflix on my PS3 but if I couldn't would I still prefer PS3? Of course. I hope to dear god I don't sound like an elitist prick, but I cringe whenever I hear "gamers" say they like one console over another for some stupid app that has nothing to do with gaming.

No, not at all. I completely agree with you. Netflix, Hulu, internet browsers -- they're all icing.

What matters is the games.

I can't agree with most of that discussion. Of course exclusives are important. Why would anyone buy a PS3 over a 360 if multiplatform games where the only reason for them wanting a new console? I'd say in that case I'd buy a 360 because a lot of multiplats DO run better on that system. No, the truth is that they'd buy a PS3 for TLOU, GOWA, Beyond, Puppeteer, Rain or even Until Dawn.

Indeed good sir.  *virtual high five*

Id say hell yes, what else can us fanboys fight about if theres no exclusives for our consoles.

if exclusives didn't matter then i would only own PS consoles, and PC's, and i'd have no need for Nintendo consoles.

I laugh at these arguments. Why do I own a 360? For Halo and Gears. Why do I own a Wii U? For Mario and Pikmin. Why do I own a PS3? For Uncharted and God of War.

Heck if it wasn't for exclusives, the PS3 wouldn't have passed 5 million sales.

Exclusives are still the most important part of a console purchase to me. I hate that the thought of anything else taking center stage over the ACTUAL GAMES is even something to consider. Kinda pisses me off actually. I don't care about what apps the system can perform lol, I just want to play awesome games.

People who like Sony IPs are going to buy the Playstation 4
People who like Nintendo IPs are going to buy the Wii U
People who like Microsoft IPs are going to buy the Nexbox

That's all that seriously should manner. This whole media hub "taking over the living room and meeting all your needs" should be a complete afterthought. I hated the slight focus of it in this gen and i'll be pretty upset if the focus is more on "look what we can do" rather than "look what games we have".

Hear, hear.

The problem is that some of the numbers point to the opposite. I think Microsoft especially will push entertainment on its next console. Remember that people spend more time on Xbox LIVE watching movies and TV than they do playing games. At least as of last year.

I've always wondered why people choose to do those things on their only not-so-reliable-thing-that-plays-games instead of something else. Except my toaster everything else in my home plays movies.

OT: Whenever I buy a gaming system is because it does have enough games that I want to play or more games that I want to play than the competition, and they aren't available in the systems that I own. And that means exclusives 90% of the time.

Obviously they do. PS3 has outsold the 360 almost every year they've both been on market, yet it's been more expensive and had a smaller install base (ie less people to want you to buy it to play COD with them). Either its free online or more exclusives that are selling it right now.

I will always buy Xbox just for Halo. I'm not big on Gears of War, and Forza is good racing game for me although I'm not very big on racing but as long as Halo continues to release I can guarantee I'll always get Xbox.

The only game for PS3 that would make me even consider buying one is The last of us but seeing as to how Next Gen consoles are heavily rumored to be releasing this year, I doubt I'd ever get it.
