They have. Check out the games by Pendulo, Daedalic, Wadjet, Amanita Design and of course Telltale. All should be available on GoodOldGames.

I love GOG :) I'm playing Sacred through GOG right now.

But I think the article is talking about point-and-click adventure games regaining control over the imagination of video game players, becoming something more than a niche market.

So far, there's no evidence of this happening.
