Look i know the WiiU is going to take a lot of heat but if you guys are happy with the WiiU just ignore them. Honestly i dont see why Nintendo needs a lot of power for their games so im glad where it is. They brought innovation to the table so just ignore what people has to say about the wiiu. It is next generation. Will it be the most powerful? no but it doesnt matter. As long as it has good games that is all that matters.

...In the OP I stated that generation status was irrelevant to if you enjoy a console or not....You can't just claim it's next gen without stating why. Tis the point of this thread.

Why is it next generation?  because it is the next generation of nintendo hence next generation.

Power and innovation does not make something next generation.  Moving forward makes next generation.

But you are ignoring rival machines. It may be moving forward for Nintendo, but not when compared to existing consoles. It seems absurd to say that a console which is technically similar to 7th gen machines is 8th gen just because it was released at a later date.

7th and 8th gen are just takes it back to where it all began.  Id or Crytech, can't remember who considers us to be in the 3rd or 4th gen.  He counts from 3D modeling going forward.  It is all on interpretation on how you take that but honestly each console is in different generation.  That is just from when games began.  Xbox will be going into it's 3rd generation and PS4 to it's 4th etc.  It really doesn't mean anything else.  You are looking to far into this.

Wii -> Wii U ?
If you ignore hardware, then how can you determine the difference or similarities in consoles?

The Wii U can be considered next gen because it replaces the Wii. The Wii loses relevancy while the Wii U gains relevancy. Functionality is also important; there needs to be a considerable difference in functionality between two consoles in different generations.

What do you mean by functionality? And what if that functionality doesn't differ between rivals?

You know what, forget I said functionality. It has no impact.

Just consider this: All relevant consoles should be considered current gen.

yes.  We are in the 8th generation of games.  Not 8th generation of specific company or console.  if you interpret that wrong it's not my fault.

So you think the current system should just be current gen and past gen instead of assigning numbers?

Intriguing.

Just your grammer was all over the place in your previous post...Would you then say game engines are a better factor for determining gen rather than consoles?

To me, the main determining factors are release date, and increase in power relative to the preceding console from the SAME company. Comparing the console with it's competitors to make this determination makes no sense. In the Wii U's case, especially, when we don't even know what the other two consoles even look like.

A console being underpowered =/= not being next gen.

Have some time to kill? Read my shitty games blog. http://www.pixlbit.com/blogs/586/gigantor21

No.  Graphics has nothing to do with what next gen means.  It simply means moving forward in technology.  i already anwered your questions and told you what it meant.  now im don here.  If you reply im still done here. Im not going to keep bumping your thread.

It can be useful to note distinctions between two different old gens like the SNES gen and the NES gen. Obviously neither console is relevant today, but they are definitely different generations, because they were relevant at different times. Whatever you use to label those generations (1st gen vs 2nd gen, NES gen vs SNES gen, etc.) doesn't really matter as long as the distinction is made.

If you want to categorize rival consoles in generations, then again, group them based on their relevancy. If the time period when two consoles were relevant overlaps a lot, then it's safe to say they were in the same generation.

I never even mentioned graphics.

The hell is wrong with you tonight? You seem to be ping-ponging all over the place and two posts ago your post makes no sense whatsoever...And then you go off on one talking about bumping....If you are so sensitive over this topic, maybe it'd be best to skip over such threads in the future?
