Forums - Sony - Potentially Major PS4 info leak! *And more*

Let me first start off by saying that I am the first to report this leak.  Also note that this, as with any leaked rumor - should be taken with a grain of salt until further confirmation!

As some of you may know, I am going to school for Game Design and Game Art.  Other than my diehard love for video games, it was a longtime friend of mine that convinced me to go to school for gaming.  Said friend is someone who I have been gaming with since week two of the PS3's Launch, and I know for certain that he is a Sony employee.  (He works in marketing)

For the past several week's I have been begging him for even the smallest bit of Information on the new PS4, but have been ignored around virtually every corner; until recently.

After the new Feb. 20th teaser went up, I again approached said friend and pegged him for announcement information (after all, marketing must have some sort of information at this point right?) and he seemingly cracked.

Now this is the part that you should take with a grain of salt.  All of the above is true, however I am not sure if the following section has any true value - or if I was fed falsified information.  I have been sitting on this for about a day now, contemplating whether or not I even want to make a post about it.  But it cant hurt can it?  So here goes.

***

1.) The PS4

The first thing that I was told, was that the PS4 will launch with two unique SKU's.

---- A.) The traditionally titled -- Playstation 4.

---- B.) and the Interestingly titled -- Playstation 4K.

He did not elaborate on either SKU, so I have been left to ponder what this info could mean.  Will one PS4 be 4k capable, and the other not?  If so, how will that affect PS4 games?  I will leave that up to you to decide.  He did however hint that some of the rumored spec's are fairly accurate in comparison to what his office has been told.

2.) THE ORBIS

The second thing said friend mentioned; was Orbis.   According to him, the Orbis codename was not intended for the Playstation 4 - but instead the codename was given to Sony's new line of Playstation Branded 4K T.V.'s.  He did not elaborate on this point, but did mention that they would not launch in line with the PS4.

3.) ADD CAMPAIGN'S

The third and final point he bestowed upon me, was information regarding two upcoming ad campaigns designed to promote Playstation.  (Emphasis on the fact that he did not specify this is an ad campaign for the PS4 or Orbis T.V.'s)

These two ad campaigns will air in conjunction with each other and be titled:

---- A.)  Thank. You.

and

---- B.) You. Are. Welcome.

Again, he did not elaborate on the details of these two campaigns.  I can only speculate that the "Thank. You." campaign will focus on paying respect to the Playstation brand's current and loyal userbase; while the "You. Are. Welcome." campaign will take a more direct, show-offy approach to generate more hype and interest outside of Playstation's current userbase.

This is all that I was told, and again - take this all with a grain of salt because there is certainly a chance that I was knowingly fed false information.

Speculate away!

...uhh...ill just put my favorite quote of all time here.

"Welcome to Pain, the second of three...You have dealt the first...now deal with me!!"

Around the Network

don't see how they can top the ps3 launch commercials

PS branded TV!!!!! I hope so, Built in PS4? 4K? I would buy one day one!!
Not sure about the 4k and non 4k SKU, seems odd.

I don't think he even knows enough

Sony would be smart to not let the majority of their employees know all the details because there is always a chance somebody could leak all the info

I feel like the majority of the Sony employees should be shocked just like everybody else at the E3 announcements

but major leaks have happened in the past with products like the Vita so maybe he does know everything but is only giving you a teaser of what will eventually be announced

I hope that the 4K is only video quality because i don't think a console running 4k games could launch at a $399 price point

I also hope that both SKUs are 4k compatible instead of only 1 being 4k compatible. I hope he made a mistake when he told you that

Makes sense, the 2 techs will promote each other.

I'm wondering if one SKU is the xbox arcade equivalent.  An affordable Playsation 4 with some dumbed down features (such as a small hard-drive and whatnot) while the PS4K is the high end, expensive model for more dedicated and/or wealthy fans.  it's the only thing that make's sense in my mind.

The 4k think, if true, may mean it will be 4k ready. Games won't be 4k, but as TV's come out that are 4k the Playstation 4k will be ready to output movies in 4k. Maybe the regular PS 4k will need some kind of dongle to interface with a 4k TV.

Now I'm off to get a glass of water to wash down this heft grain of salt I just took along with these rumors.

Playstation always had something fairly new when it came out. Playstation= CD, Playstation 2= DVD and Playstation 3+ blu-ray. There is no new disc format right now, so it would make sense if even there was a 4K version of the Playstation 4.

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

'When the people are being beaten with a stick, they are not much happier if it is called the people's stick'- Mikhail Bakunin

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

It makes some sense, most people won't be able to afford a 4k TV anytime soon and so won't care if their new console is 4k capable. And then you will have the crowd who just wants a future proof console, or will buy into 4k immediately or relatively soon, and those people will want the 4k version. The 4k version could have beefier hardware for the extreme resolution output, while the PS4 can just have enough to kick 60fps at 1080p. So you get to choose between the $300-400 console, and the "$599" console.

The big question would be how quick game developers themselves would be at releasing 4k resolution games.

I like this idea, an affordable model that can be bought by the majority $399- $449, lesson learnt from the ps3....
and a model for the dedicated gamers who can see the 10 year investment in which they are buying, its like sony can't resist cramming a console full of amazing tech lol
