Dell said they are done with Android tablets and phones a year ago...

and when the deal clears, it will be locked-in to that promise.  A statement of loyalty means jack squat bc things change all the time,  come on now

I don't think Microsoft needs Dell to promise anything, writing or verbally, in terms of android. Dell determined that the race to the bottom with Android tablets and phones isn't profitable for them. It had nothing to do with Microsoft.

Chromebooks tho may be something Microsoft is worried about and this is where the microsoft financial aid may come in to play. Maybe the next surface will be made by Dell? :)

I think that MSFT would love for Dell's unquestioned loyalty, and the buyout would be one way to achieve that.  Keep in mind that if the buyout were not realized and Windows8 did not pan out, then Dell would strongly be considering a move to android tablets.     Also, are you saying that MSFT is worried by Dell making a chromebook or chromebooks taking a large chunk out of computing market share?     You must be talking about the second possibiility bc you seem to be saying that MSFT already seems pretty assured about Dell's loyalty, even though you realize that loyalty in business only happens when there is a reason to be loyal

I honestly don't think Android has anything to do with this. Dell wants to stop selling hardware all together and this is microsofts number 1 concern. It would be great to have Dell not make Android or Chromebooks but I don't think microsoft is too worried about that.

But out of the two, I am sure Microsoft would rather you buy Android than Chromebook... android is still very much a fragmented, open source operating system that is strictly a mobile operating system. Chrome OS is googles end game. The Google final solution lol.

Google is a company that exists and succeeds because of user data they are able to retrieve and analyze. They are not Apple who is able to anticipate the next padigram shift in technology and position themselves ahead of the curve. They iterate their products with the research data they collect from users until it sticks...  Google currently can only mine the user data through their online services and only the data you choose to provide and this has worked pretty well for them so far. If this Chrome thing takes off, Google will have a full blown operating system running as their online service that connects directly to their cloud in order to function.

That's a pretty scary thought if you're Apple, Facebook or Microsoft...or anyone that cares about privacy.
