Forums - Gaming - Xbox 720 and PS4 to be announced this coming May

I'd be surprised if we hear anything before E3. Just doesn't make sense; and this article doesn't convince me.

Original XBOX was announced in may of 2000 by Bill Gates

Xbox 360 was announced on MTV in May of 2005 and then released that november

PS2 was announced in March of 1999

PS3 was announced in May of 2005

PSV was announced in I think March 2011.

Gamecube successor (Wii) Announced in January 2003

Do you see a pattern here? E3 is when they give details, not announce.

OMG did they really announce the 360 on MTV? Was it popular back then or something cause that channel or whatever it's called is terrible. Aren't they the ones who show Jersey Shore and shit and not actually music...

Yeah.  MTV was very popular during that time.  They use to be all about music, but now they have a bunch of dumb shows which is why they have lost a lot of popularity.  It's still popular today, just not as popular.

Go to my new thread and we can talk about it their.

Do not be surprised that GTA V ends up delayed until PS4 and X720 launch.

Launching GTA V for the current console makes the most sense because you have 140 million PS3/360 gamers. Delaying GTA V for next generation consoles is not an option. They could always re-release a higher resolution port of GTA V as a launch game for PS4/720 but PS3/360 will have GTA V.

AMD does not view a GPU as "coming from" the 8900 series or whatever, it is a custom chip for both consoles. "Mobile versions" are usually just the same as desktop with lower clock speeds. It can't be 20nm as that's not until 2014. Also the slides you linked are pointless marketing ones.

Ok but if we look at custom chips for prevous consoles, they were only custom in being cut-down versions of faster PC parts. RSX in PS3 is just a cut-down 7950GT, while R500 in Xbox 360 is basically an early cut-down 2900Pro, lacking DX10 support. AMD suffered serious delays for HD2900 series due to buyout of ATI/restructuring. The actual specs behind RSX and R500 in PS3/360 are just cut-down PC parts with Xbox having eDRAM on a separate die.

If the GPU in PS4/720 is AMD-based, it has to be Graphics Core Next architecture because it would be worthless to do a custom VLIW 28nm shrink and waste millions of dollars when GCN already exists on 28nm. Since we know AMD has moved to 28nm with GCN, we know it has to be GCN 1.0 or 2.0. Mobile 28nm GPU line-up is a good indication of the maximum amount of power a PS4/Xbox 720 GPU can have in a small form factor where power consumption and poor airflow are key constraints. Even if you design a custom GPU, it's still subject to 28nm laws of physics, and that puts HD7970M/8970M as the best possible GPU in a next generation console. On-die eDRAM is separate from the actual capabilities of the GPU because it is mostly used to minimize anti-aliasing performance hit. It's too small for textures of next gen games. Those slides are not pointless since they give us an idea of when the next generation Sea Islands AMD architecture is launching (Q2 2013), and already highlight that everything below HD8900M will be insufficient. When you say a custom GPU won't be "Coming from" HD8900 series, you are not making sense. AMD has no faster tech than GCN 1.0-2.0. That means we know right off the bat that HD7970M or HD8970M is the absolute fastest it can be. AMD will nto have anything faster than HD8970M in a console because if they could, they would have launched it on the PC as well and so no much part is coming in 2013. Both the RSX and Xenos GPUs in PS3/360 were slower than the fastest NV/AMD cards available on the desktop at the time.

GCN

"GCN 2.0" is just a rebrand, there's no difference. R500 is also unrelated to R600, it was a cancelled GPU.

Anyway when the consoles come out I'll post on your wall whether I was right or not. I'm confident.

R500 is VLIW-5, it's exactly the same as the R600 architecture without DX10. The codename has nothing to do with the architecture in this case. R500 is based on R600 VLIW-5 architecture. The custom part is not the architecture but AMD reduced the # of functional units, which made it worse, not better. It's really just a VLIW-5 240 SP HD2900 (or 48 ALUs, 5-wide vector units (VLIW-5)). The GPU clock is dropped from 600mhz to 500mhz because it was fabbed on 90nm instead of 80nm like 2900GT. That architecture has ROPs tied to memory controllers. This is why to lower power consumption, they chopped off 8 ROPs and with them half the memory bandwidth was wiped out. HD2900GT had 16 ROPs and 256-bit memory bandwidth and that's why R500 only has 8 ROPs and 128-bit memory cuz it's gutted. That's what I am saying if you look at the specs of HD7970M/8970M, that's the fastest you can ever have without going cross-fire. I am sure they'll have eDRAM to help, but I personally think the fundamental functional units (shaders, TMUs/ROPs, memory bandwidth) of the GPU will be HD7970M/8970M at most. I hope they keep 2GB of VRAM though.

Anyway, if you are suggesting that the GPUs will be even more advanced than HD8970M, I'll be pleasantly surprised and would glad to be wrong on this one :)

I think MS might stage a separate event for launching the next console instead of doing it at E3. What do you guys think?

I trust the guy who told me it was unrelated to R600. Not just cut-down etc.

I'm suggesting it will have something new, yes. Not more powerful but a better use of the transistors/power it does have.

Anyway as far as I know 720 is Q4/13 and PS4 is Q1/14.
