Mmorpgs has long been a genre loaded with a bunch of similar games to WoW. But that does not mean that there aren't any unique games in the mmorpg market. Infact, today i'd like to present and explain you a very unique mmorpg which was made by an indi developper Three Rings which is now owned by Sega. And this mmorpg is called Puzzle Pirates. This game has been around for already 10 years and it has always had a small but very strong community. Don't let the graphics turn you off, because graphics become very unimportant once you start understand and loving the game.
Puzzle Pirates is one of these games that is extremely community driven. Players can own and run their own shoppes, job some real players to work for their shoppes, declare war against other real players to try and conquer islands and then to govern them, merchanting, etc. The core mechanic of the game will obviously be puzzle as you can see by the name of the game.
Officers or higher ranked in crews ( crews are kinda like guilds in other mmorpgs) can run voyages. To run them, they must job real people to then go defeat other pirate ships, sea monsters or explore the hunted seas to earn some PoE ( the game currency). Once the captin of the ship decides it time to call it a day, he can simply port his ship and split the booty that they have amassed during the voyage. Once they have split the poes, you can then play poker, play hearts, spades and a few other puzzles (sword fighting, treasure drop, drinking, etc) to try and earn more money. Or you can decide and go buy clothes, houses, shoppes, ships, furniture, swords, etc).
What I personally like the most of puzzle pirates is that the game is 100% free. There is a type of cash shoppe where you can buy Doubloons (which you sell through the bank to receive poe), but you can easily buy doubloons with your own poe earned in the game. And if you are good at poker, hearts, spades or any puzzles in general, you will find yourself rich and trying to conquer islands in no time.
