Forums - Sony - DOWN PERISCOPE: Sony to drop PS3 to 299$

If they did do this, there is nothing Ninty and M$ could do to offset this. Nintendo has supply issues, so lowering the price makes no sense. M$ already has a console at this price point so it wouldnt help them either. The PS3 however would skyrocket in sales. They may not be making money on the PS3 yet, but they do make money on every stand alone player they sell as well as profit from the PS2 and PSP. With production costs dropping the way they have, It isnt that out of the question for them to do this. It would help boost US sales for sure.

Which is why the wouldn't keep it at the current price. They are making profits on at least 2 of the 3 models now, and could easily lop at least $50-100 off each system without too much of a hit. You have to understand that MS is determined to stay competitive in this game for generations past this one, and is willing to lose billions more if need be.

I've contacted Sony for a response on the price cut.  I'll let you know about it if I hear something useful that isn't confidnetial.

So if you don't get back to us it means that hey DID tell you something, but it was confidential, so we can assume that it's true! :p

One more thought:

This would be the 3rd price drop by Sony in under 6 months. But none of the price cuts we've seen have been "straight up".

What are the chances that this price cut is just more finagling of the PS3 models? Could it be that this is a 40gig "fire sale", intended to leave the 80 gig as the sole option? Or maybe there is a 120 gig model in the pipeline, and in 3 months we'll see yet another round of price shuffling, with the 40 gig discontinued, the 80 gig at $399, and 120 gig at $499? Or perhaps the "discounted" 40 gig will be bundled with games/cables/feminine napkins which will raise the cost higher?

If true, it will be Sony's last shot to regain against the Wii and 360..... It 299 doesn't work. It's over........

It won't work. Both the Wii and 360 could drop it price this week if need be, but in a post-holiday, recession conscious market, I'm not sure that there will be many people in the mood to buy a new console.

More sources, and it seems as if this IS because of the Time Warner deal as I have been speculating.

Playstation 3 gets another PRICE CUT January 28th

$299.99 USD for a Playstation 3 looks like a steal. Rumors are floating around that this is becoming reality, and before the end of January 2008. Is it possible?

We contacted some of our insiders to get the latest scoop on this rumor and see if it had any fact behind it. We were skeptical, after all the PS3 just received a price-cut in November.

The Playstation 3 IS in fact getting a price-cut. A new model, will retail at $299.99 USD, the announcement will be made January 28, 2008, and the new price will take effect Friday February 29, 2008. There are two main reasons as to why the Playstation 3 is getting this price-cut.

Reason 1: The playstation 3 production costs have decreased tremendously over the past couple of months. What used to cost $800, now cost less than $400.

Reason 2: Time Warner. In exchange for Time Warner's exclusitivity (and an end to the format war), Sony has promised to reduce the price of the Playstation 3. As many of you know the Playstation 3 is equipped with a blu-ray disk drive, and the more the Ps3 sells, the greater the chance of Blu-Ray's success.

We are very excited to bring you these news today.

Considering how much each side was willing to pay to get Warner, a deal like this makes sense, as costly as it would be. Though announcing it a whole month in advance seems strange.

I hate rumors like. As more and more begin to pile on, I actually start believing them. :(

If it happens... obviously sales will go up. But how much? Enough to match the Wii?

Doesn't the PS3 need more games to become mass-market?

I usually don't like to point this stuff out,  but I already have my sale ads for next week at Toys R Us, and we have it in there at 399.99/499.99. So this would be a sudden decision, by the way.

From my first post on this page:

"Like I said earlier, this could've been a stipulation in any deal Sony made with Warner, dropping the price of the ps3 yet again to spur adoption of Blu-Ray, and cause the standalone manufacturers to drop their prices to compete. This would explain both why Sony is dropping the price so soon after the launch of the 40gb, and also why no word has popped up from any retailers (the Warner decision was a last minute decision made on Jan. 3)."

Something involving Warner would explain everything. Of course, this just a theory.

its $100 of either current model with 12 months no interest financing. so if you can pass a credit check you can get 40GB for $299 or 80GB for $399....

nice deal, i got a friend who JUST bought a PS3, might mention and see if he wants to return to save $100, not sure how his credit is though
