Forums - Gaming - What If Wii U Was a Full-On Generational Leap?

The only reason the PS3 was $500-$600 was because of the Blu-Ray drive, unless Sony is shoe horning a mega expensive disc drive format into their next system again, PS4 won't cost that much.

Well that and the cell in it. Ps3 was built with too much technology in mind from the get go. Ironically if sony had been more thoughtful about their approach and priced it competitively 360 would definitely not be anywhere near where it is today. The blu-ray drive was expensive but the ideas sony had with it were all wrong with the main stream consumer anyway. Also sony's strategy with consoles has been to push a new disc format. That is what they said on stage at e3. They had cd with ps1. They had dvd with ps2. They had blu-ray with ps3. I highly doubt they will change this approach.

Sony really need to design ps4 to be more like a gaming machine and less like an entertainment device but they won't do that because it is a chance to push stuff in their other divisions as well.

Nintendo have done this before. That's when people started to think Nintendo should have dropped out of making consoles. This is what N64 and GC were: power beasts of their era, and it didn't really put them in a good spot.

GameCube launched 18 months after the PS2 though.

N64 would've destroyed the PSOne IMO if Nintendo hadn't crippled it with cartridges-only, and even then that was a year after.

Good points, but the thing is no matter how powerful Nintendo made WiiU, Microsoft could still outperform it due to the fact that their console would be releasing a year later and they have more to spend on tech to boot.

But I think the main problem with this philosophy is that Nintendo would be following the pattern of what the others do, rather than setting a standard themselves.  While not everyone is sold on the WiiU Gamepad, we've already seen Sony and Microsoft respond with press statements and Smartglass functionality in ways that suggest, "Hey, our systems can do that too!" rather than "Aww, that's stupid... no one wants that".  Says a lot, IMO.

I thought this was I good answer/post so I decided to people should read it twice ^^ What speaks in Nintendo's favor is the fact that MSony have tried to emulate the GamePad in one way or another.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
