Excellent post and I totally agree. The problem though is that for some people they feel a personal investment in the numbers. Why I dont really know but they do. So for certain Sony fans this is a prime time to attack and fir MS fans its time to get on the defensive.

Either way the arguments dumb. I mean who really cares if its 43 or 45 million. Either way its a hugely successful franchise and is making hundreds of millions of dollars. Its a success any way you slice it

Attacks? What? When we get numbers that don't match VGC sales for ANY big game, there will be a discussion. What are you talking about??

How exactly is it an attack if we say that the entire series may be undertracked by a few million? Are you so sensitive that if someone even fancies the idea that the series may be a bit undertracked, you suddenly feel "Oh NO! Sony fans attacking Microsoft!"

Who in here has even implied that Halo wasn't a success? WHO?? No one..the mention of this is completely irrelevant.

You made an interesting point about Microsoft leaving out some games, but the moment you bring up this conspiracy theory crap, you look like an over-sensitive fanboy.

Grow up

Does it matter?  They could be  talking about Bunigie's Halo and excluding Halo Wars and Halo Combat Evolved.  They could be disregading some of the Halo 2 add ons, we really dont know and it doesnt really matter.  This site is not perfectly accurate and I guarantee that tons of games are overtracked on this site but we arent talking about all of those games because no one will ever know exactly what each game has sold.  You can speculate but no matter what 43 million soon to be 50 million is an accomplishment so congrats to Microsoft and Halo.  End of story

What exactly is your point?

Yes, they could be excluding Halo Wars and Halo Combat Evolved. But we don't know if they did. We don't know much. That's why it's called speculation.

Yes, other games have been overtracked before, hence why whenever we got information which may contradict VGChartz information, we have always discussed to what magnitude they were overtracked in the past...PLENTY OF TIMES. That's what we always do. And typically, the bigger the game, the more interesting the discussion. So it's no surprise why people are discussing this. I'm not sure why you are so against something that's been the core of VGChartz for years now.

Yes, it's a great accomplishment for Microsoft and Halo. What is your point? Point to me where I have said anything remotely close to downplaying the success of the IP. Go ahead, find it. This was completely irrelevant.

You need to check your paranoia and recognize that this discussion is appropriate.

I didnt say you said anything bad about it, what Im saying is there is no need to speculate on something that is accurate compared to something that isnt.  This site has never been accurate.  If they say it's sold 43 million then that's what it has sold.   We don't know exactly what games he is including or if it is retail only, we just don't know.

lol which are all franchises that are juggernauts.  Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Pokemon etc are all big names and there is no need to argue with that.  Halo and masterchief deserves to be on that list.

Gran Turismo included... over 50 million in the last decade.

Which is another prime example of a juggernaut.  I thought about putting that on the list but I wasnt sure if that was within the decade.  And Im still not positive on that.  4 and 5 was within this decade but what about the first 3?

2000 - GT2 (Dec 99 in Japan/US)
2001 - GT3

Exactly, Halo is hugely successful no matter what.  We already knew Vgchartz wasnt exactly accurate so I dont find this as news to anyone

Halo 4 has a shot at selling 4 million in its first week a new record sales week for an exclusive game.
Halo franchise should hit 50 million by the end of the year.

If you recognize that I didn't say anything bad about the franchise, then there's no reason to bring it up. Period.

No we don't know if and by how much it's overtracked. That's why it's speculation. Again, speculation has always been very prevelant on this site. If you don't like speculation then you can just leave the site altogether.

No, we cannot speak in absolutes. Yes, there are plenty of possibilities. We can only look at the data and make judgements on which seems the most likely, but unfortunately, because of some people in this thread, they don't want to see any discussion as it could potentially mean their franchise would be knocked down by a tiny bit. It's sad.

It would be nice if when interesting information like this releases, that threads could have meaningful discussions with people from all sides bringing in different ideas that we could all consider, but no...as soon as some people do bring out different ideas and explanations, they have to simotaneously resort to flaming and perpetuating this childish console war (not talking about you). Thus forming an us-against-them mentality and rendering any discussion of the subject impossible.

Great sales for a great franchise, Halo 4 will add a couple mill to that number this year.

Since 2001?

45.5m shipped (plus whatever GT6 has managed to ship since last numbers - 250k or so max)

So shipped 46m or less, very similar to Halo.

Ben is right, whichever way you slice it Halo is effin' huge.  As is GT, as are the Ninty titles mentioned.

GT3: 14.89m
GTCS: 1.56m
GT4P: 1.40m
GT4: 11,44m
GT5P: 5.34m
GTPSP: 3.61m
GT5: 7.43m

Plus GT2 was launched in late 99... so GT2 sales less 1 year.

42.55m + (9.37m - 1 year sales).

I was guessing 50 million counting the 2000 year.

Why are we talking about Gran Turismo?
