Forums - Gaming - So, what the heck happened to 3D?

If I recall correctly, even on here, the talk was about how 3D is the future... NOW.  And some attempts to hype the PS3 having it best was made out.  Even the 3DS was made out to be exciting because of it.  Now, both Sony and Nintendo downplay it?   What the heck happened?

And I lost track of the Sony article.  Sorry.

Edit: And I found the Sony article:

Nintendo doesn't seem to downplay it- they're definitely talking about it less, but it's not like it's excluded from any 3DS game.

I don't know about everyone else but I love 3D. The problem with console games right now in 3D is the systems just need more power. Super Stardust HD in 3D is breathtaking because the graphics are 1080 while Uncharted 3 in 3D is a jaggy mess. I'm hoping Sony pushes 3D on Orbis and makes it a norm.

Outside of gaming 3D is doing great. People love to talk shit about it but the truth is, 3D=money right now. If somehow 3D did start to die like previous times, don't worry. James Cameron is working on Avatar 2-4 and the billions made by those movies will stimulate 3D once again.

It was a fad and excitement for it has dropped off.

3D ended up becoming something of a hot item more or less because of things like Avatar. Everyone started thinking 3D was the new way to go, since it was becoming insanely popular for movies and such, but it's just dropped off now. In gaming, it has a different beast to slay. I ended up reading a bit of an article on 3D not too long ago (link here: http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2012/09/29/3d-tv-viewership-rate/1602741/) and, even just in the States, 3D TVs aren't that popular. They comprise a tiny segment of the population.

So you have 3D movies that are levelling off in monetary gain, 3D TV that doesn't really get people watching and 3D gaming without a lot of TVs in the population, it illustrates pretty well where it went.

3D is a nice feature, but not a selling point for me.

I found the article saying Sony also is downplaying it:

Well the industry is still hopeful

http://www.dvd-intelligence.com/display-article.php?article=1755

According to Futuresource Consulting's latest survey. By 2016, 3D Blu-ray is expected to account for 24% of total Blu-ray sales in the US and close to 35% in Western Europe."
However
In the US last year 4.8 million 3D Blu-ray sales were recorded with a further 3 million units in Western Europe where 3D titles represented 5% of total sales.
This year the expect 3D to have a 9-11% share of total blu-ray sales.

Hoepfully those predictions aren't based on this part
In figures quoted in 3D Focus, within Western Europe, 3.1 million homes were 3D Blu-ray capable in 2011 (households owing both a 3D TV and either a standalone 3D Blu-ray player or PS3). By 2016, 41% Western European homes will be 3D Blu-ray capable.

If you look at this recent thread there are plenty of people not using the 3D on their tv

(The poll got reset, if you read the replies plenty of people have either never used it or don't use it anymore)

The definition of fad, unfortunately.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

If it wasn't so expensive and pain in the butt to set up (different 3d for pc vs consoles and movies) and the glasses I would be all over the 3d. But until its cheaper/easier/more mainstream i am out.
