Forums - Gaming - AMD Sea Islands aka 8000 series GPUs will be featured in next generation consoles

Why are people saying 180 watts for the GPU would be too much? The PS3 had a power supply of 380 watts when it launched. There's plenty of overhead for other components.

the consumer acceptance for the size/weight of the first PS3 model was very low - a device that consumes even more power (1st gen PS3 max consumption was ~200W) has to be even bigger and heavier to accomodate for the cooling system it needs

additionally the heavier/bigger sth is the higher are it's transport costs

I think it's safe to say both MS and Sony won't make a console that's bigger than the PS3, so a 180w GPU is out of the question

And people have been trying to argue that Nextbox and PS4 wont be considerably more powerful.

Ive been saying it all along and I hold to it. Next gen systems will be extremly powerfuk

This'll be the gen after this one.  No console has ever releases with cutting edge PC tech.  If Sony and Microsoft wanted a 8870 in their consoles, they would have to start designing them today, not 2 years ago.  Look at cutting edge pc tech from 2 years ago, that'll be about the best you can expect from a console.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the GPU in the Xbox 360 is based on the (high-end at the time) X1900 XT, which was released in 2005, same year the console released. Same deal with PS3's GPU I think.

You're right about the 360, though it was based on the same architecture as the x1800, not 1900xt.  The RSX is a scaled down 7600.  Also came out in 2006.

I stand corrected.  I still don't think they'll go about this generation in the same strategy though.  No one wants another 500-600 dollar home console on their hands, that only just now in their dying throes have reached a mass market price.

PS3's GPU was based on 7xxx and came out after 8xxx
360's GPU isn't based on any other GPU afaik. It's not the same as the 1xxx or 2xxx GPUs.

See, these are the companies that I love.

They don't go cheap on their jobs re releasing the same stuff and slowing the advance of computing power.

There are wide variations in processing power between cards in the same GPU family ...

At the low end the GPU won't be much more powerful than the Wii U, at the high end it will be powerful but run hot and be expensive.

I wouldn't be surprised if either Sony or Microsoft choose this family of GPUs but I think it is more likely that they would choose the 8750 or 8770 than the 8850 or 8870; and they certainly will not be using the 8950 or 8970.

This sounds about right. 7750 has a TDP of 85W I believe. If 8750 can deliver a 30% performance boost and keep the same TDP, it could be a winning recipe for a $299 console.

There is no way they can shove a 130W GPU in to a console due to price, cooling and PSU restrictions.

yes, you are right, PS360 use GPUs based on TOP GPUs in 2005, the problem is that people think that a component made for console has the same price as a component made for PC. Take the example of RSX, this GPU is based on G-force 7800($500 in 2005), RSX has the same number of transistors(~300 million) and the same memory(256 MB) as 7800, but each RSX cost ~$130 in 2006. The same with 360 GPU.

you are forgetting other parts, HDD, CPU, cooling system, heat off the motherboard, case size, etc etc. 180W for the GPU is more desktop computer category.

Attoyuo
would be more like SSJ1 Goku vs Perfect Cell

I think that PS4-720 must have some kind of contract to decrease their initial price, if a console costs $600 off contract, it can cost $300 with some contract, just like Apple does to its products. Nobody complains about it, Apple launches a new iPhone every year costing $600 off contract, I don't know why a console that will be supported for at least 7 years can't cost $600+(off contract) too.
