They probably have to make up for the lack of vita and psp sales. It's not looking good on the portable front.

Can someone please explain to me why Sony needs to lower their price right now? By the VGcharts numbers, they are #2 in sales and they are still outselling the Xbox and Wii (It's main competitors). They don't need to drop prices until they see their sales decrease below these two.
I know the WiiU is just around the corner, but the library of games for it that may show its real potential will not be a real factor until 1 or 2 more years. Granted that Nintendo fans will buy what Nintendo publishes and like it, but until Sony sees it's market share reduced even further, they don't need to drop their prices at all.
There are many ways to please the consumer base; one, I understand, is to please some people by dropping it's price. The other is to give the consumers desirable content/applications that motivates them to stay or switch over to them. If Sony goes for the ladder, I think they will be in a stronger position then slashing their prices. Right now, they are not--nor should they--meet the demands of the whining consumers that can't afford a PS3.
I get the feeling that the people whining about the new pricing are those who want it, but still wont buy it because it's too expensive for them even though they own another console, buying games for that said console, and are probably paying their monthly smart phone bill. Life is about choices, make the ones that suit you best.
I also get the feeling that the other people that are concerned about the new pricing, are the Sony fan base that doesn't want Sony to loose this console race. I would like to ask the Sony Fan base? Does it really matter to you if they win or loose? Do you get something meaningful/physical from them winning? (Do you get a cookie?) I know Sony is in financial problems right now, and I (as a Sony fan) think it is the best thing that has happened to them. A situation like this makes good companies re-evaluate their priorities and listen to their consumers wants (but not their whining).
To sum it all up: It doesn't makes sense to me for them to drop their price right now when they are leading the other consoles. Will they lead after the holiday season? Who knows. All I know is that if they keep their sales momentum, it might benefit me because they will better financially, and that guarantees that my PS3 will keep getting updates. If they don't do well, then it will benefit me because they may be forced to slash their consoles price and I can buy the new one because unlike the majority, I really like the new design. It may also push Sony to open up further to new ideas.
Do I care if Sony wins the console war? No, not anymore, because I have come to the realization that a competitor striving for the top is more versatile and open to new ideas than one that has been at the top for a long time.

Wanted that price cut bad didn't you? Maybe it hasn't reached that price point because Sony realizes, no matter how cheap it becomes it will never sell what it needs to sell to be beneficial to them. By that I mean, if Sony continues to just cut the price like what their fans want so bad, they will never make any money from it. |
lol. that is my reaction to all your posts.

I don't beg for price cuts.
