I wouldn't say it's a sudden trend; just one that's accelerated like cell division. Several predictions* have failed to come true this generation, despite the attempts of some to encourage it (via FUD, Metacritic, whatever else). The mindset of such a person dictates that they must up the ante.

It's kind of fun, though. I will like what I like in spite of being told not to, but it sure is vindicating when I enjoy something that is hated.
