Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony pushes Vita remote play with GOW HD + ICo HD (collections)

"We’ve got some great news for PS Vita owners today concerning Remote Play, the application that enables you to interact remotely with PS3 using your PS Vita and a Wi-Fi connection. Starting today, PS3 owners will be able to download an update for God of War Collection and Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection that will enable these classic games to be played from their PS Vita using the Remote Play function.

So what does this mean? It means you’ll be able to enjoy two classic HD collections almost anywhere, whether you’re around your PS3 or not, from the comfort of your PS Vita and a Wi-Fi signal. Both collections include customizable control options, so you can choose to have the R2 and L2 buttons from your PS3 mapped to PS Vita’s rear touchpad. This is great news because God of War, God of War II, Ico, and Shadow of the Colossus represent some of the most beloved and acclaimed titles in videogaming — and both collections look stunning on PS Vita’s brilliant 5” OLED screen.

To access the Remote Play functionality for both God of War Collection and ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection, you’ll need to download patches for each game on your PS3, at no extra cost. Once you download each patch and try out Remote Play for yourself on PS Vita, be sure to let us know what you think!

In addition to playing selected games remotely, the Remote Play feature enables you to access music, videos, and photos stored on your PS3 through your PS Vita. For instructions on how to set up your PS3 and PS Vita for Remote Play please visit our guide here."

Can someone fully explain what remote play is? Does your ps3 have to be on? Is the game streamed to your system or installed, if its streamed is there lag?

Remote Play is a feature on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation Vita which allows a PSP or PS Vita user to interact with their PlayStation 3's Xross Media Bar. Users can access music, videos, photos, PlayStation games, PlayStation Store and various applications stored on the PlayStation 3's HDD, or external flash drives and optical media attached to the PlayStation 3.

Remote Play works by encoding a live video stream of the output image on a PlayStation 3, then delivering it over a wireless network connection to a PlayStation Portable. Actions performed on connected devices such as the pressing of buttons are uploaded back to the PlayStation 3 over the same connection. This is similar in concept to remote desktop in Windows and Linux. The audio may also be sent to and played by PSP or PS Vita, or instead delivered through the normal PlayStation 3 audio connections, thus allowing the PSP or PS Vita to be used as a remote control for a PlayStation 3 acting as a media player.

I've tried it once on my PSP, wasnt that much of a big deal, not a big fan of the feature but its nice for those who want to do something extra I guess.

Meh... for these 2 titles I'd much rather a Vita port. But for High end ps3 titles, this could be quite cool. Sony would need to get big titles to support it, Like God of War accession or GTA V.

I tried remote play with a few PSX games, it doesn't look too good, the image quality drop is noticeable.

Regardless, it's nice that the option is there and I think it should be universal for all games. It's great being able to play your PS3 games anywhere (near wifi) so if I go on holidays I can continue playing in the hotel, for instance, even with the quality drop.

I kinda like this feature, but how does it work? If I am in the office (on a wireless network) and I want to play, how do I play the game?

iirc it's basically..you put the game on your ps3. enable remoteplay option on your ps3. and you can connect to it via online on your vita.

OT: I really need to try this. I think sony might push this much more with PS4

i think it auto turns on. i treid this years ago with my friends ps3 and my psp. and we got it to turn on remotely. but it worked speratically.

so hopefull with updates and the PSV it works better than it did, several years ago.

It doesn't need to. As long as it remains on standby (or just plugged if you have a slim) and you enable remote play on your PS3, then you can switch it on remotely via Vita (or PSP). As I said, the IQ takes a hit, but it's interesting. As long as there are games to use it with, of course...

You might be interested since I know you own a Vita, so I'm just bringing my answer above to your attention.
