I don't know how long away it is, but it's quite a ways distant. The infrastructure just isn't t there yet. My DSL is only about 2.5 mbps, and getting THAT was just luck--AT&T has since scaled back the maximum in my area to 1 mbps, I only got to keep my speed because I was basically grandfathered in. I live about 20 miles away from a mid-sized city on the east coast in the US. It took me forever to DL RAGE from Steam a few days ago.
We still have a long way to go before cloud gaming makes sense on a large scale, and digital distribution is still a pain in the ass for many people. If I had to depend on that, I would buy a lot less games.
Also, if one console manufacturer goes all-digital and the rest do not, then the first one to try it is going to take a pounding. Even fanboys will jump ship.
