Forget game consoles, search, Skype... Win 8/RT is the biggest gamble Microsoft has made since the 80s. They've basically gone "all in," betting their hegemony in conventional PCs for a place in the emergent mobile PC market.
My take: The monopoly has already cracked. This is more of a question of how much of the bleeding can be stopped. The best case is that Microsoft will achieve perhaps 30% of the tablet market, and less than 10% of the smartphone market. The worst case is that Win 8/RT will be rejected altogether, costing MS not only a presence in mobile computing, but deep losses in laptop/desktop computing as well.
On the upside, the real growth sectors of the company — servers and business software — look pretty safe.
