Forums - PC - Notch slams new Steam user agreement terms... and EA

BeefJack

Minecraft creator Marcus Persson, more commonly known as Notch, has expressed his distaste of Steam’s new user agreement, which Valve published overnight. The new terms forbid users from launching class action lawsuits against the company, saying: “It’s clear to us that in some situations, class actions have real benefits to customers. In far too many cases however, class actions don’t provide any real benefit to users and instead impose unnecessary expense and delay.”

In response, Notch tweeted: “Uh… You can CHOOSE which lawsuits you allow? Ok then, Mojang doesn’t allow any lawsuits at all any more.” It’s likely to be quite a touchy subject for Notch at the moment, given that Mojang was recently sued for alleged patent infringement pertaining to the Android version of Minecraft – something Persson and co vehemently deny.

The new terms pertaining to lawsuits weren’t the only Steam-related gubbins to get Notch’s goat, though. Shortly afterwards, he added: “Dear Valve: As a game developer, I understand the temptation to “rent games” instead of “sell games”, but please don’t do this. It is evil,” before retweeting another user who tweeted: “Doesn’t Steam always rent you the games? You do not own any of these games and when steam stops their service you lose your games.”

Still, his comments were something of a backhanded complement to Valve, who he called “the least evil publisher,” adding: “Saying that to EA would be like asking a creeper to grief less.”

You tell ‘em, Notch!

I actually think the new user agreements have more to do with letting go the "valve" on updates and DLC.

By not regulating their downloads and giving publishers more freedom, no doubt there will be a case every know and then where said publisher gets sued in a class action.

As could valve.

That said... the EULA in this regard is pretty toothless anyway.

Saw this over on Gaf

^ wow what a bunch of jerks right there! (the image from Nsanity)

Nintendo and PC gamer

Douche move by Valve sure, but I hate Notch even more. He got LUCKY one time and he thinks he's hot shit. He's not. He's just a big fat hat wearing swede, and nothing more.

I can't hate Notch because Minecraft is great and he has good taste in hats.

~~~~ Mario Kart 8 drove far past my expectations! Never again will I doubt the wheels of a Monster Franchise! :0 ~~~~
Hence why I won't ever buy into this digital distribution bullshit. You are enslaving yourself! Pretty 'classy' move by Valve indeed.
I'll say it again; If this would be the future for gaming, I'll stick to retro-games.
