Anno is the best (and best looking) modern city building/managerial sim franchise imo and each installment is a million seller in Germany and Austria alone - the franchise was originally co-developed by an Austrian (Max Design) and a German (Sunflowers) company, the first game called Anno 1602 became a smash hit in 1998 and sold 2 million copies. The successor Anno 1503 sold around 2.5 million copies afaik. Max Design and Sunflowers are now defunct. Ubisoft bought the franchise and today the games are co-developed by two German developers (Related Design and Blue Byte - the latter one is a company with a long tradition in creating city bulding/managerial sims: they invented The Settlers almost 20 years ago).

Personally I still prefer the historic Anno 1404 (also called Dawn of Discovery in NA) over the futuristic Anno 2070, but both games are great.

Fun fact: The sum of digits of each Anno franchise entry is 9 (Anno 1602, 1503, 1701, 1404, 2070).

As a long-time beta tester and player of all Annos, I was somewhat underwhelmed by Anno2070 (beta). While it showed some improvements and new ideas over 1404 in some areas, in other areas it got worse. I still think that 1503 is the best Anno (looking at game ideas), followed by 1404.

2070 does have the same multiplayer as 1404 (4 players or 8 players in 4 teams max).
