When I grew up there was no rivalry between what consoles our friends had over our own, rivalry between the two companies themselves, yes! I had a sega mega drive but when we went our friends we went on the snes!!

So you must have LOVED going over to your friends house and I bet you went there a lot.

Infact you were probably ALWAYS there.

What can I say, the snes was a beast lol

There is no way anyone who knows anything about SNES/Genesis would even consider a different battle.

Nothing really compares to not only the local wars between fans of each, but to the advertising slander thrown between Nintendo and Sega. It was fantastic!

Hell back then, you didn't even own both consoles. You had one or the other and that was it.

...and I still don't give a fuck about MK's blood because my game ran better and had SMW and Zelda:ALTTP bitches!

I have enjoyed this thread more than most recently.

Probably due to the fact that SEGA have been mentioned more times in this one thread than all other threads combined this year.

Guess SEGA won't get anywhere near as many mentions in a thread again until Shenmue HD's reveal for current gen download services later this year*

*Fingers crossed for ^ that one anyway.

But the sales gap between the SNES and the genesis was so huge! It was really one-sided.

The 360/PS3 rivalry, the sales are neck to neck almost, MS has stolen the 3rd party games and developers that Sony took for granted.

And I can guarantee you 360/PS3 fans are by far the most fanatical gamers of any gen.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Well were I come from the megadrive/snes battle was not a major thing at all, and the guys house I used to go to had a mega drive and a snes, we just used to play games, and fanboyism was nowhere near how it is today, I think people hype it up bigger than it was, it was the company's that were going at each other not the console owners.

Line 2 is debateable. We don't know what happened for sure with Sony and 3rd party devs. Bessides, Microsoft [admittedly) gunned for games once exclusive to Sony's platform.

Line 3 is also up for debate, but much less measurable.

Line 1 alone renders that rivalry moot.

But with the internet the 360/PS3 fans all have a voice. Back then it was merely word of mouth

Umm I take it you weren't alive then?

Genesis had a very large head start and it took the majority of the generation for SNES to pass it. Then there were many multiplayer games where it was a huge fight amongst fans which was better and  on top of that you have the many great commercials where Sega is attacking Nintendo directly. I'm sorry, but PS360 don't even come close.

PS360 fans own both consoles. That didn't even exist during snes/gen war. You had one or the other. The fight also wasn't just core gamers on internet forums. It was massive taunting and fights among everday kids and teens. SNES/Gen defined console wars. Hell, Gen added not one but two massive add-ons to fuel the flames of more power.

I had both -- or rather, my brother "got" one and I "got" the other and we shared them.

Which is exactly why the SNES/MD "war" was a bigger thing... the animosity between the two camps of gamers was worse than it is now between PS3 and 360 gamers, and that was managed without the massive help internet anonimity gives to fueling fanboy wars. Yes there is probably more badmouthing overall now due to online forums, but very little of it is truely serious... I mean on the internet people can get into heated debates about different types of bread, pretty much anything and everything can be a battle on a forum.

The sales gap wasn't as big during the middle of the generation (mainly because MegaDrive had a 2 year headstart, so SNES was catching up). Sure the PS3 and 360 sales are generally much closer, but not many gamers care about that... probably because a lot of them own both consoles anyway.

Fact is, the SNES/MD battle is still cooling down now, over 20 years since it started... wheras the PS3 vs. 360 battle i would say is already cooling down for the gamers, and is probably even over for Sony and MS themselves now as they have moved focus to next gen.... sure there were a lot of heated arguments early on before the Wii proved itself the victor, then I would say a lot of HD gamers kind of banded together to defend dual-analogue style gaming over motion control for a while, then when it was obvious the Wii was unstoppable they decided to go against each other for a bit again, but it kinda became a little half-hearted IMO... and didn't really pick up even when the Wii started faltering.

This is after all about the whole console rivalry, sales are a part of it of course, but the main battle is between the gamers of each camp, and then the company rivalry (which includes the sales battle)
