Forums - Gaming - What real 'next gen' is there actually in the Wii U...?!

That's what Sony did with the PS2.  When the Gamecube and Xbox released in 2001, the came face to face with Final Fantasy X, Jak and Daxter, Metal Gear Solid 2, Ico, Devil May Cry, and a bevy of instant classics.  The competition never stood a chance.

I know this is getting a bit off topic but: I remember the first time I saw Jak and Daxter 1 on the PS2, I was absolutely blown away by it.  Genuinely the most graphically impressive game around on the market at that time.

I can see Nintendo doing something like this with the Wii-U, like you rightly say.  Metroid Prime 4 taking full advantage of the better tech?

When Mario Galaxy came out it looked on par with any Xbox or Ps3 game on the market at the time. Even the early tech demo of Zelda looks better then most PS3 title now. I guarantee that by the time PS4 comes out Nintendo games will be looking just as good as early next gen titles.

Mario Galaxy doesn't even look as good as Kameo (360 launch title).  Not even close.

I will say that many of the early 360 games were just hi res ports of PS2/Xbox games (ie: Gun, Tomb Raider Legend, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, and many more) and did absolutely nothing to showcase the power of the console.  The 360 released in 2005 but it took almost a year for the first game to REALLY show what next gen could hold.  I hope and suspect that this is the case with the Wii U.  It's getting ports of PS3/360 games but it will show us its true power by Christmas 2013.  I think Nintendo is taking advantage of being the only console on the market and when the competition makes their move, that's when they'll unleash the big guns.

One thing you have to remember is that when 360 launched no one had the experince to develop for HD consoles, and therefore the launch games didn't look fantastic. No I'd hoped that developers have the neccesary experience to make great looking games - and still the WiiU is only on par with current gen technology... That has me worried. To summeries what I'm trying to say: it's not a fair point refering to the 360's launch titles because there weren't much experience with HD games, but there is nowadays, why WiiU's games should look better than they do.

I did say "hope".  Also, experience is one thing.  Time is another.  I hope that, given enough time, the experienced developers can create something special.  Look how long it takes for this gens heavy hitters to get made.  Engines have to be designed and optimized.  In one of the threads I saw, (if it's to be believed) Ubisoft stated that the Wii U is more powerful than current gen but right now, it's going to take time for it to make Assassins Creed look as good as the PS3/360 versions.  Not even better looking.  They're working to make it look just as good.  When devs get time to figure out the new architecture, I'll admit success or defeat.  I'm just being optimistic in the meantime.

Isn't that screenshot from Dolphin emulator? I have it and Nintendo games look crazy good on it. Try F-Zero GX and Windwaker, they look like current gen games.

I said it was from dolphin in my post lol. I just kinda understood where pokeclaudel was coming from. Put SMG1 or 2 into HD and they do look like they could be on PS3 or 360. Of course the Wii itself can't do HD so there's the big catch.

And yes Wind waker looks utterly gorgeous in HD. I think it is still one of the most beautiful games ever made and would kill to get a new version on Wii U.

@hunter_alien. Post was expected from you but come on now. Nothing about the Wii U is just on par with the 360/PS3. We basically know the specs and they are quite a bit beyond the 360/PS3. The fact that launch games don't reflect that means literally nothing. By the end of Wii U's life it will have games that blow away TLoS. Heck even Retro's title should be a big step up (I'm expecting it holiday 2013, something to compete with PS4/720 launch titles).

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

Same, here.  After a year of only playing Red Faction, NBA Street, Zone of the Enders (great looking game) and The Bouncer, when the REAL heavy hitters came out in late 2001, I didn't know which awesome game I wanted to play first!  Jak and Daxter was one of those games that showed what we were waiting for.  It didn't even have load times!

And that approach, now that I think about it, has been done many times before.  The N64 facing off against Tomb Raider and Resident Evil in 1996,  The PS2's launch games facing off against Jet Set Radio and Shenmue, the PS3 launching against Gears of War, or the Vita launching against Mario Kart 7 and 3D Land.  When the competition arrives, I think Nintendo will release the Kraken on their asses.  The question is:  will people overlook the Wii U's best games (like they did with the Dreamcast) or will they embrace the console and its games like they did with the PS2.  2nd gen Wii U titles will likely be on par or better than launch games for the PS4/720.

NO, just NO and stop makeing a fool out of yourself. Nobody in their right minds would say that SMG looks even close from tech point then lets say Gears or Uncharted. It had an amazing artstyle, and it was a marvle on the Wii, but it was nowhere even close to first gen HD games. I played SMG, and its one of the best looking Wii games, but even then its not even close to lets say the first Lost Planet.

You can't say that that doesn't look as good as an early 360 game.

Okay.  Mario Galaxy may be the greatest game ever made but it didn't look like this.  Millions of us played it.  No screenshots can change what we saw.  And even if it did, the backgrounds were static and not a lot was going on.  This was the first 360 game I owned and SMG didn't look anywhere near as good as this:

Just watch a few minutes of it.  Keep in mind that I played it in 720p and I played Mario in 480p, too.  Makes a huge difference.  Why not post a video instead of these high res bullshots?  If I purchased SMG expecting it to look like those pics you posted, I'd be mad as hell!

I think that what pokeclaudel means to say is that, when rendered in 720p, Super Mario Galaxy stands up pretty well to launch 360 titles.

Hell, so does Skyward Sword. Or Wind Waker, even.

When using art styles like Nintendo's, resolution ends up mattering a lot more than for other styles. Running in 480p on your 50" screen is eye-burning, but knock it up to 720p and suddenly it's actually kind of nice.

I read somewhere, once, that Nintendo actually made the assets for Mario Galaxy to be in 720p, though the game itself only uses up to 480p. I have no idea what that means, much less if it's true.

The lagless streaming/controller itself is genius.

Why are U guys talking only about 720 p...? it also does 480p And 1080p..

And the nextbox (and if it comes ps4) will not be much better than wii U.. becurse nintendo are going back to having a power beast.. just like N64 and GC.. and the differents. will be like 360 vs ps3 (one year betwen)

Yes, the Wii-us tech that is based on 5 year old PC tech will be a power beast Just wait and see your power beast raped, when the PS4/X3 comes out. The truth is that Nintendo dropped the ball. If the console could have run games like TLoU in full 1080p at 60 fps, then, maybe then it would have had something under its hood. Thus far its on par with 360/PS3, and no matter what Nintendo fans dreamt of, this is the reality they will face for the next 5-6 years

It has at least 3x the memory. Even if the clockspeeds on CPU/GPU are roughly the same, it still stands well ahead of PS360. Statistically, verifiably, factual.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

SMG looks on par with PS3 games? In wich reality do you live in? Stop posting 1080p screens from Dolphin emulator. SMG doesnt look like that at all on Wii. Sure the artstyle is amazing, but graphicswise even 2005 360 games look better than SMG.
