A recent Japanese message board thread about JRPGs (Japanese role-playing games) noted that while some would call them the "classic style" of RPG, overseas there are many cases where the term "JRPG" is used with a negative nuance. To join in on this negativity, posters decided to discuss what they themselves hate most about their domestically-made RPGs.

*Note there is no order or ranking involved. We're just counting off ten things.

1. The characters are all good-looking guys and beautiful girls.

2. Movie --> Dialogue --> Movie

3. Opening chests without permission

4. You have a bunch of characters, but only a few of them can participate in the battle.

5. The actual game contents are subordinated to the theme song, voice actress, etc.

6. About 1,200 people line up for preorders.

7. Hidden things you wouldn't understand unless you read a walkthrough

8. The protagonist always does the opposite of what I think.

9. You're just running errands, and then before you know it you have somehow saved the world.

10. They're called JRPGs.

I think this way a very interesting read, quite a few of the points really hit the mark like the "movie-dialogue-movie" which can be annoying about JRPGs. So what do you guys think? Do you agree with the Japanese on their views about JRPGs?

*pokemon I am looking at you*

No mention of cliche ridden stories and poorly developed characters? The list still makes sense for the most part though.

Come on you rather see a good looking girl then a ugly one.

How about a good looking girl who isn't so sexualised?

Then there are several games with unsexualised women. Even in games that heavily sexualise women, it's rare that all, or even a majority, of the women are sexualised. If you take Bioware's games, for instance, there's always at least one female teamate you can bring that isn't sexualised. The same goes for fighting games, and such.

It doesn't exactly take a genius to not play with the sexualised character.

Based on that, a WRPG with cutesy anime graphics would sell millions.

(We know the Japanese don't buy realistic games, but the flaws they describe (overbearing narrative, not doing what the player wants, game content being second to production) are mostly fixed by recent WRPGs.

You have to clarify that. When is a girl sexualised? Its just a game you cant have sex with them anyway. And I dont know so many JRPGs but for what I know the females character where not just walking asses and boobs.

Really? You're saying the majority of women in Japanese games aren't sexaulised? And the men for that matter... It just makes the industry seem immature.

Always surprised that no one find it annoying that you can't get item X anymore because you have progressed to much in the game. Was a pain in the ass with FFVIII. I missed half the Guardian forces and had to start over :s.
