Forums - General - Not sure anyone can help, but I would like to get a career going again...

One thing that I get troiubled by on the Internet a bit is the opinions of people in some areas.  An area in particular is the belief that anyone can make it, get a job and so on, if they really, really wanted to.  I have seen it here also.  That and various slurs actually hurled my way, and in general.  I get troubled, because I am flat out stumped on what to do job wise.  I get the "stop whining and get to work", as expressed in articles like this:

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/05/01/when-did-it-become-ok-for-americans-not-to-work/?intcmp=obnetwork

I also get a feeling people, if not that, are looking up to line up reasons to figure out why I am not working.  Like now, I do have back surgery I am coming off of.  But then what?  In a few months, then what?

Does anyone realize how frustrating, annoyed and depressing this is?  Well, can I ask, if you really, really, really care, please look over what I have here as a background and help me find anything.  I know I take a risk being like this, as the last time I went and did something like this, I had one person blog about it and frag me to death over it: http://www.sequenceinc.com/fraudfiles/2010/03/this-is-why-welfare-sucks/

That is the classic "You lazy bum should get a job, period."  Person hadn't seen I had tried for years doing things listed below, like starting two organizations.

and someone reply that I should kill myself so his taxes would be lower and he wouldn't hear me whine.  I am frustrated here, so I write now, since this is a gaming site.  I do face a  major issue of not doing paid work for a number of years, years also in the computer industry, which hurts in a huge way.   I did try to keep my unemployment at the time, and work around it, because it was closer to what I was making.  I did also end up maybe not landing work because maybe I tried to set standards to high, and try to stick with things closer to what I was doing, so I could maintain my career.

A I do risk things writing here, but so be it.  Anyhow, my background, that may help:

* BS Degree Management, Masters Information Systems.  Graduated with good GPA also.

* I have years of IT experience, which now is actually multiple years ago, which might help, but since it is over 6 months ago, it ends up being something recruiters can't work with.   I did test, software development, helpdesk and Unix System admin.  I have a few years experience in a lot of areas.

* You can see links to my game designs below.  I am looking to get one published in a magazine recently I hope, if all goes well.  You will see I have created over 70 games in my life, of the tabletop variety, doing documentation of rules in them.

* I started two organizations still functioning.  CADERS is one.  The other is IAGO, a non-profit registered in NY.  IAGO is at: http://www.IAGOWeb.com  .  One has a functioning management team in place, and the other has a functioning community.  It just worked out that way actually.  This work had a recruiter speak of targeting online community manager as a spot.

I could forward my resume on.  I am getting weary of doing years of unpaid work.  I want to get a career going, so I am reaching out there for help.  If you have any leads, or someone in the industry you know who can help me get on actual project work that would land a job that would get my career going, that would be beneficial.  I am writing seeking this, risking putting myself out there.  Because of my interest level, and also what I have been working on, it would be best if it is connect with games in some capacity, which is the reason for writing here, in hopes someone can help.

If you can help, please contact me.  Please do not give me the usually, "work on your resume, elevator pitch, cover letter, yadda, yadda, yadda" because I have.  I need actual connections here and to get something going.  Do NOT give me the usual networking advice either (Yes folks, I do know that LinkedIn does exist, and I was able to find a recruiter who told me to target community manager with it).  I need leads or at least ways to build up a portfolio to better my odds.  My issues would be either I am not finding the right leads, or my portfolio is insufficient.  It isn't a polish issue.  If you can help, please post below.  Again, I need help here.  I want to get working, paid, and on my own, rather than where I am.  There has to be something out there, and I am requesting help now.  If you can.  Want to start to get results.

If I would say there would be one area worth targeting, it would be companies that make games for portable devices, because of my work being primarily in the tabletop games arena.

Thank you for your time.
