Forums - Gaming - Samsung Galaxy S3 and Sony Playstation Vita comparison

This is my ongoing comparison of latest mobile phones/tablets to Vita. This is not a gaming will be better/worse thread.... just a continuation of my known opinion that Vita should have been a smartphone with real controls. Same power, features, etc, but a slightly different design as well as a smartphone.

Back in February when the new iPad was announced I created a thread comparing it against the Vita and stated that by end of summer there will be phones relatively equal to Vita and by year's end it will have been passed by mobile devices. Further illustrating my point that had Vita been a smartphone it could follow a yearly or every other year upgrade cycle allowing it to continuously remain competitive. Continuing to keep Playstation portable gaming at the forefront of the market. However as it stands now, I still see Vita as having a 3 to 5 year max life, losing marketshare over what the PSP gained, and not living up to the expectations of Sony.

PSVita Samsung Galaxy S3 (GSM model)
CPU ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore
Quad Core
800Mhz to 1.2Ghz
ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore (Exynos 4412)
Quad Core
1.5Ghz
GPU PowerVR SGX543MP4+

Memory 512 MB RAM, 128 MB VRAM 1GB RAM
Resolution 5" 960 × 544 qHD @ 220 ppi 4.8" 1280 x 720 @ 306 ppi
Cameras Front and Back 0.3MP (not HD) Front 1.9MP and Back 8MP HD
Storage 16GB PSVita Card ($60) 16GB (expandable with SD cards)
Battery 2200mAh 2100mAh
Connectivity Wifi, Bluetooth, 3G to locked carriers (no multiplayer gaming) Wifi, Bluetooth, 4G to almost any carrier and full online everthing.
Other Benefits Real gaming controls, Back touch panel, Sony 1st party games, ?? Full phone/computer with superb apps and really anything including games. (obviously worse controls)
Price (MSRP) Wifi $310 and 3G $360  $200 to $300 on contract... ~$600 off contract
  *4GB card is only $20

I'd like to note that the GPU on the Vita is still more powerful than the GPU on the S3, while they are comparable, Vita still should beat it in most any benchmark testing due to Sony's extra tweaks. But, its closer now than it was with the iPad. However, the S3 has better screen, better CPU, more memory, and more overall features. Leaving Vita with relatively better graphics and real controls, obviously most important parts for gaming.

Anyone still thinking Vita will retain a clear supremacy by year's end?

-_- Great, and now factor in running games at a 30% higher resolution, poor optimization for hardware and and a more resource heavy OS. Also, the vast majority of studios developing for Android/IOS/W7 don't have the budgets or resources to create anything that'll compete with the average Vita game graphically.

pretty much this.

+ The S3 will never be able to fully utilize its capabilities due to Android, meaning that - in terms of gaming - the Vita will probably kick the S3's ass.

However, the S3 is better with pretty much everything else. and i dare that thing not to be, due to the fact that its more than double the price.

To add to that Superchunk the next gen for tegra and snapdragon, as in after Q1 2013 is anyones guess, since that information hasnt been revealed yet. Unless you want to trust nvidias proclaimed advancements for their next tegra device...but only a stupid person would do that.

Its not like a manufactures is going to come out with something amazing for the remainder of this year, the tec is already known, its already planned for release and it is not better than PSV :)

Even a new galaxy S3/iphone 5 is limited to what the manufactures have available for the 2012/2013 timeframe.

Follow the links. In every case there are chips coming out now that are equal to Vita and chips slated for 2012 (probably late) that are superior. Look at their tables and the last few items listed and their specs. All based on ARM CPU/GPU configurations have items clearly better for THIS year. I don't really compare Tegra since they build their own GPUs to go with the ARM CPUs and without a wide range of benchmarking, its not as easy to speak to. However, these two alone will be in high-end products as well as a simple understanding of Apple and what they always do its obvious their next chip will be identical to Vita's in the iphone5 later this summer.

Samsung's chips http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exynos

Exynos 4412 32 nm HKMG ARMv7 1.5-1.8 GHz Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9     2012
Exynos 5450 32 nm HKMG ARMv7 2.0 GHz Quad-coreARM Cortex-A15 MPCore     2012

Here's the GPUs likely to be combined with these CPUs

Mali-T604 4 256 KiB OpenGL ES 1.1 & 2.0, OpenVG 1.1, OpenCL 1.1, DirectX 11, Renderscript [4]
Mali-T658 8 256 KiB OpenGL ES 1.1 & 2.0, OpenVG 1.1, OpenCL 1.1, DirectX 11, Renderscript

[5]

Then combine this with Samsung now adding 1GB RAM and likely having 1.5 or 2GB by next year with this group.

My point still stands. By end of summer there will be many devices equal to Vita in terms of raw power. As 2013 starts there will be many devices soundly beating Vita and as the year rolls on it will only begin to be more of a separation.

Its like you not reading some of the things im posting...

adreno based gpus are weak in comparison to powervr gpus! They are weak compared to tegra as well. The adreno 320 is better than the current one in the S4 chip but not much better. This is why qualcomm has just recently licensed powervr gpu tec imo. To advance their gpu offering for their next gen stuff. And since we talking gaming performance gpu power is very important.

With regards to the exynos chip..which announced smartphones/tablets use the Exynos 5250 or higher? All of samsungs tablets announced at MWC does not have these SoC's in them, ALL OF THEM. The galaxy S3, according to current rumours is most likely to get the Exynos 4412, which will put it in the same ballpark as PSV in terms of CPU performance but again the gpu is inferior!

And since most manufactures have NOT announced their next gen tec, i dont see how you can claim that it will be that much more advanced than PSV when they arent even up to scratch at the moment.

To end this, my main point from a prev post:

"Im not saying the PSV is waaaay ahead of the rest, but what im saying is that it is ahead at the moment (especially in terms of gaming performance), im also saying that in the next year the PSV's chipset will stil be relevant, id imagine quad core cpu/gpu combinations will only become the norm then."

You then said this:

"Vita's chips are what all the next phones/tablets will have THIS year. In the next 3 to 6 months."

Thats where i call total bullshit. NO phone/tablet thats currently announced or even rumoured to be announced, releasing in 3 - 6 months will have the power of the PSV especially not tegra 3 or S4 devices!

I feel like ive derailed your thread enough! lol my apologies.

Notice i guessed the correct exynos chip

Anyways i stand by what i said in that thread.

Intel Core i7 3770K [3.5GHz]|MSI Big Bang Z77 Mpower|Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1866 2 x 4GB|MSI GeForce GTX 560 ti Twin Frozr 2|OCZ Vertex 4 128GB|Corsair HX750|Cooler Master CM 690II Advanced|

Are you trying to compare the hardware for gaming only?

If so than the vita should be labelled as the win since its primary function is gaming, while its a secondary function on the galaxy

Bet with gooch_destroyer, he wins if FFX and FFX-2 will be at $40 each for the vita. I win if it dont

ok, and I left in the important parts. Here we are two months after that discussion and already there is a phone that is nearly matching Vita. You can stand by what you said, but trend is that Vita will be surpassed in terms of raw power by the end of year.

S3 is comparable already, you have to admit that.

Given 2013 will have mobile phones that are easily greater than Vita's power, you'll see iOS and Android games that are identical or better.

iOS already has a solid gaming distribution and gets ports of everything.... as iPhone5 matches Vita this year (probably around June) its games will be identical.

Google annouched months ago that by 2013 they will have a major upgrade to their gaming distribution and with that the hardware will easily be better than Vita.

As for controls, keep in mind Android (and probably iOS/WP8) can sync with any bluetooth controller. So while its not as mobile, it can be comparable.

But I don't want to start a gaming vs arguement. My main point is still that Vita should have been a smartphone and Vita will be dead early.

wh-wait, what else do you use the galaxy for if not for entertainment? Dont tell me people actually use their smartphones for calling each other or writing text messages, now youre just beeing silly.

I think what superchunk( a very fair guy I must say) is trying to show is that the Vita so early in it's lifetime is already on the verge(if not already) of being obsolete in terms of hardware capabilities. In fact, Superchunk had used the higher rumored specs of the Vita which could be less powerful when comparing it to the S3!!! Once again SC good job on a fair and interesting article.

I'm not saying S3 is better. Just relatively simlar ... given the progression of phone/tablets, better will exist by year's end.

2013 will have 3rd party games identical to Vita's. Only difference will be phone/tablet true cellular multiplayer and Vita's better built-in controls (identical controls if you include sync'd bluetooth controllers).

To my way of thinking if there was a Vita phone , it would sell at around the price of it's competitors and most likely come with similar spec in regard to extra ram etc ,also it would enjoy the same luxury of releasing upgrades every 6-12 months , now this sounds good from a phone point of view but not so much from the games side for a closed system , I'm mean really if Sony want a phone with analogue sticks surely it isn't that hard to add it into a future smart phone , and leave the vita as a dedicated games machine .
