Forums - Gaming - Lets talk Starcraft 2

Was Terran in Brood War, played predominantly as Protoss in Starcraft II. Mainly did Void Ray cheese in the lower leagues and amazingly it was successful just about every time. I also had a lot of fun with some of the custom games, although it's tough to beat the original SC's games.

Diamond Protoss here.

YOU NEED TO GET INTO WATCHING TOURNAMENTS!

SC2 is a better spectator sport than anything I have seen, they play for $100,000 with professional commentary all for free.

But seriously if you have some RTS experience as you said, just never stop making workers., spend your money and play defensive and you will be in Diamond pretty fast.

I've been watching NASL season 3, I like the casters and the games are good and I learn a lot ( like how to best wall off your base as a terran or micro marines/dropships).

I can't for shit micro ghosts and watching some of those games make me feel better, some of the pros have serious problems microing their ghosts too against high templar..

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Dreamhack this weekend was good, and GSL, IPL and MLG are the big ones worth watching. I pay for GSL because the free broadcast time is bad but it's completely worth it to see such high level play casted by Tastosis.

Try out the other races, you'll find you need less micro (but they're less cheese resilient and Zerg needs good injects and much more scouting)

Terran in Brood War was all about land units. I think they called it the Terran push but I don't remember. It consisted of Siege Tanks, Ranged Upgraded Goliaths, Vultures (with mines) and Turrets. You basically slowly build your way to the opponent's base laying mines, sieging tanks, advancing the Goliaths, building turrets.

Edit: That's for Terran vs Protoss (which is what I played all the time against my brother)

In SC2 mech isn't viable against Protoss in competitive play. You have to make marines and/or maurauders. So it's not a positional game. I consider TvP to be a weakly designed matchup, it's just not exciting to watch Colossus vs MM ball.

TvT: marine-tank-medivac or tank-hellion-thor (rarely)
TvZ: marine or hellion into marine-tank-medivac vs mutalisk-zergling-baneling or ling-infestor into brood lords
TvP: marine-maurader-medivac (+ghost/viking) vs zealot-stalker-colossus or zealot-storm
ZvZ: ling-baneling into roach into roach-infestor or mutalisk (games end fast, no real lategame)
PvP: blink-observer or immortal or (rarely) phoenix  (games end fast, rare lategame) into mass colossus (rarely)
PvZ: stalker-sentry-immortal into colossus vs mass roach into muta into brood lord

The stim/siege tank micro is fine, my issue is ghosts. ( I don't use ravens except as detectors) so my fix right now is not to make ghosts lol....

I like Terrans because marines/marauders/medivacs works against most things. and if you need a hard counter it's usually something you are already set to produce in numbers ( like vikings). And with this set up you only have to upgrade infantry units and don't need to spread your upgrades...( a 3/3 stim marine is a very strong unit even in the end game).

I think I would suck as Zerg as banelings and Queens needs a lot of microing and you need to switch units mid games as a Zerg whereas Terrans can keep upgrading what they have  and just add a few more units to the mix ( like siege tanks or Thor). Zergs need 3 bases to shine too and right now I don't have the skills for that, 2 bases is all I can manage...

Protoss I can handle the sentries but I would forget chrono boost too often...

Yeah if you're playing off 2 base only then stay Terran.

Chrono isn't nearly as important to P as mules are to T or inject to Z. After about 6 minutes you can let it build up or even not use it to no real downside in the lower leagues. Just whenever you build probes or upgrades use it when you remember.

Well I did my first day of laddering on plat and I got destroyed at the exception of a couple wins at the end of the day.
The good thing is I am learning every cheezy attack on earth as this is what 50% of the players do.
In one evening I saw :
- 2 protos canon rush
- 1 4 gateway
- 1 6 pool zerg ( should have won that one but forgot that zerglings need less space than marines to walk btw building...)
- 1 ultra fast banshee.
Some guys will actually go far to cheese you.
I beat the second canon rush and the dude transitioned to mass void rays..
I beat 1 one 4 gate attack ( found every pylon before they could be used and destroyed them) and the guy came back with dark templar..
Still I am learning a lot...

I could cheeze back but that does not teach me much so aside from one quick banshee that gave me a quick win I am sticking to my macro game...

One thing for sure is that from now on if I quick expand against Zergs or protoss I am building my command center in my main, upgrading to orbital and then flying it in........ No more building in its spot crap..

PS : I don't think I will stay in plat for long. I am matched up against silver mostly and the AI says they are favored or slightly favored....

As Terran, all of those cheeses are easily defensible. Just wall in fast preventing all 2gates, cannon rushes and early pool timings, and if you don't scout P or Z expanding within 5-6 minutes then build bunkers+pull SCVs to repair and assume 4gate / roach all in. Against 4gate, stay in your base no matter what. Don't move out until he has completely gone away, your extra SCVs and in base extra CC if you have one already put you ahead.

Don't fast expand (CC first or 1 rax FE) until you are familiar with the game and know what to look for when scouting.

If you hold a cheese and are ahead it's OK to spend money to make sure he can't get at you with some other surprise. Scans are very good.

I have started to scout but mainly to locate the enemy base on maps where it is random.

As soon as my orbital is up I use the first energy to scan the enemy base ( typically when my scv gets to their base it's too early and i can't see the cheese yet so I need the scan). I think the next step is hidding my SCV next to his natural to see if he expands ( which would give me a nice counter to build a barrack there if he canon rush or 6 pool, I just have to hide it behind the gas instead of right on the natural spot.))

I just need to stay focused and I know I can beat most of them.

Fought against another canon rush at lunch and that was close, I lifted a barrack to drop it near his base but he detected it or he was dead ( i chose a poor location), I made like 4 mistakes in that game or I would have beaten him ( killed first pylon with SCVs but went for building canon instead of second pylon, didn't try to repair or lift the barrack being attacked, didn't micro my marines well and dropped the barrack on his natural spot instead of hidding it inside his base ( it was Antigua))). Otherwise I would have easilly beaten him because he was all in on canons so even with my build up slowed down I would still have been ahead..
