No, it's a spelling issue because he intended to spell thread but he made a mistake. Because his incorrect spelling turned out to be an actual word, that doesn't mean it wasn't a spelling error.

Using the wrong word applies when someone intentionally uses a word that doesn't make sense. That would be a grammar mistake.
