Ha! I'm doing spanish right now too!
Listen to fazz though he knows what he's talking about.

What is the sentence you are writing? Usually I think it is El mar, but im not sure. Reminds me, I need to study for Spanish.
"La Mar" (feminine) is mostly used in literature. "El Mar" (masculine) is much more common.
"El mar", but you should give us the complete sentence, because it depends in the context that it's used
La Mar is more poetic and generally used by the seamen ,but El Mar is the common acception .
You can find here some examples: http://www.wordreference.com/es/en/translation.asp?spen=mar
generally you can use "mar" (in english: sea), for both masculine and feminine
For example:
"ayer había mucha mar" -------> there was a heavy sea yesterday
"en alta mar"--------> on the high seas
"mar adentro"-------> out to sea
