She's just like Derpy. A one-scene-wonder from back in season one that resonated with a lot of people, especially in the fanmusic community. Her reappearence is a great shout-out to fans, ala Derpy becoming canon.
The big deal about the eyes was that she only appeared with glasses on at first, thus hiding one of the chief distinguishing characteristics in this style of animation. Honestly, other than eyes, you've got species, gender, fur and mane colors, and hairdo to distinguish between ponies. So the eye color was sort of a mystery simply due to our lack of info.

Is Lyra Heartstring the same kind of character? I keep hearing about her and somepony called Bon Bon
Hmm... Perhaps i'll make a full-series runthrough of MLP my next "watch one a day" project. I've seen multiple episodes, but its all so eclectic.

The background ponies didn't have names at first. Lyra was the fan name, and fans developed a personality for her as well (and the pony she is often placed with, Bon Bon). When Hasbro released a toy it was called Heartstrings, but then later on they changed the name to Lyra Heartstrings.
Vinyl having red eyes is because we didn't know her eye colour as said, but a bunch of fan comics and animations used red because it worked extremely well with her colours, so the debate is whether the colour in the ep constitutes a reference to the fan colour. I'm leaning to no, I think people are seeing things.
Definitely do that, and record your reactions as you go.
