For US politics, probably Jefferson.
For Australian politics, I'd either go with Bob Hawke or Paul Keating. Keating fared worse in terms of economical structure (he was an awesome treasurer under Hawke), but he had a way of making the "born to lead" conservative parties cower. The regulations put in place by Keatng also gave us protection from the GFC. Australian politics has never been quite as entertaining since Keating left.
