Forums - Sony - Rumour: PlayStation 4 Ditching The Cell Processor, Sources Say

Not a surprise. When it was in development, the Cell was touted as the future of processors. A complicated architecture, and limited market demand pretty much doomed it from the get-go. I have stated before that I work at a research university. As such, during the lead up to the PS3 launch, a group of Computer Engineers received one of the first batch of Cell Processors released to non-Developers. They loved it, thought it was great tech, but lamented that because of the different architecture, things were going to change drastically. They didnt. Intel and AMD developed their own lines of multi-core processors and the market shifted in that direction.

Still, the Cell wasn't a failure, merely a one-trick pony. Great for games on a dedicated system, a little too complicated to make the jump into other ventures. By using a more open architecture processor, and possibly outsourcing this component, Sony can ease development concerns, AND avoid a $600 price tag on day one.
