Hand gestures are new wave in gadgets

LAS VEGAS - Nintendo Corp.'s Wii game console is a breakout hit in large part because users control the play by waving around a motion-sensing wireless controller.

Many new gadgets are taking the idea of such an intuitive interface several steps further. Soon, you may be able to control computers, television sets, even cell phones with hand gestures alone.

I just got a Playstation Eye. There aren't really any games that take advantage of it, but some of the "tech demos" on PSN are pretty impressive in terms of potential. In particular, the "Blurmotion" effect in Mesmerise is a good demo of hand tracking.

Soon be able to control computers?

You have been able to control computers using an air-mouse for ages. In fact, that's where the design for the Wiimote originates.

The technology discussed in the article bears a lot more resemblance to the technology found in the PS eye than the Wiimote, as it is solely camera based.
